Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Bring warm and rain-resistant clothes with you for most times of the year. During my 5 weeks in Hamburg I had probably 7 days like this (by the way, that is the view of the top floor of the UKE). But the weather doesn't make Hamburg a less fascinating city!!!
Luggage and bags:
An extra tote or knapsack is ideal for shopping and sightseeing. They can be used to carry snacks, or pick up small items from the grocery stores and toiletrie shops. Take note that grocery stores have a 6-20 cent surcharge on bags (to encourage recycling), so your knapsack/tote will definitely come in handy.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Having lived here for several years now, I can tell you that Hamburg is generally a rainy day kind of town. From late fall to spring it is not uncommon for it to rain several times a week, nearly all day. At the very least, be sure to have a good, wind resistant umbrella on hand and water resistant shoes. For clearer days, most people all run around in sneakers, jeans, and the usual coats.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Most medical supplies can be found at your local "apoteke" (pharmacy), altough the products are nowhere near as potent as those found on supermarket shelves in the U.S. Just to be safe, it would be advisable to bring a good all-around pain reliever like Tylenol or Advil with you, or even Pepto Bismol Tablets or Tums just incase you over-indulge with the beer and sweets.
If you visit in the winter (we went there in January) be sure and pack plenty of warm and waterproof gear. there is an extremely biting wind and it can rain and snow a fair bit. I suppose it is only to be expected bering in mind how near the Baltic it is.
Photo Equipment: As always, do not forget to pack the camera. I was only using a small compact (one of the earlier models) but it was quite sufficient for my needs.
Even though 2006 will see an incredible number of tourists visiting Hamburg in June and July, I cannot stress enough that it's not always necessarily warm here, even in the thick of summer. The weather you can most likely expect is something between the mid 60's-low 70's. Even with sunny days, it cools down fast in the evening, and it's not unusal to have a string of summer days, only to have it rain suddenly and the tempature drop to 55°F degrees for a full 10 days afterwards.
Warm sunny days here are nearly impossible to predict it seems. To be safe, bring one pair of jeans and one heavy sweater, or lighweight jacket ,even if you are visiting in the height of the summer months. The trick here is dressing in layers, so remember, you can always remove your thick sweater or leave your jacket in the hotel if you're warm , but if you're underdressed in a rainy 55°F Hamburg, it 's no fun and definitely puts a damper on being able to get around comfortably!
Luggage and bags:
The usual thing that you can carry around easily
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Hamburg can be very cold in winter so make sure you have the whole complement of scarf, wooly hat, warm jumper and gloves if you intend to visit during that period. A temperature of -20 Celsius is not unheard of so plan for it.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: The usual. You can find anything in Germany.
Photo Equipment: The usual wide angle and telephoto lenses for street photographs. Black and white photography can come out amazingly in Hamburg, especially in winter.
A panoramic camera can produce stunning shots, especially around the harbour, and is worth taking if you have one.
Miscellaneous: Lip balm for frosty days.
In summer you need all sorts of clothes. In 4 days we had very cold and nice warm. So we need pullover and shorts. Don´t forget your umbrella!!!
You need warm clothes when you take a harbour cruise because it is very windy and the weather can change in more times an hour.
Definitely take an umbrella or raincoat weather as you will no doubt have read elsewhere already can be unpredictable. My first visit saw mainly wonderful summery weather (July) My second visit was more mixed with plenty of rain (I think it was September).
comfy walking shoes are reccommended as you will want to do plenty of walking to see all the sights
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: None required you will find all you could need in Hamburg
