Second visit to the AOL arena for a Sea Devils, this time around 20 degrees C warmer than last. same opponents, Centurions and same outcome - a win for the visitors 18 -24. An entertaining, error strewn game, played in front of a record Sea Devils crowd - the warm weather even persuaded Mrs Bonio to come along.
Sadly the Sea Devils and NFL Europe are no more, 2007 was the last season.
These are the most favorite sport clubs in Hamburg (that I know):
HSV, soccer, on of the best clubs in Germany: www.hsv.de
FC St. Pauli, soccer, playing in lower leagues but with a unique fan community: www.fcstpauli.com
Freezers, ice hockey: www.hamburg-freezers.de
There are two very nice indoor swimming pools in Hamburg:
Holthusenbad, U3 Kellinghusenstraße
is very nice, close to U3 Kellinghusenstraße. It has a pool, whirlpool, cool pool, a pool where they are doing waves every half hour and a heated outdoor pool (whole year). And a big sauna area.
1,5 hours cost about 7 Euro - but worth the prize if you like swimming and a break in between sightseeing. Also nice for children.
Hohe Weide 15, Eimsbüttel
I have not been here but it looks similar like the above, also with outdoorpool throughout the year.
About 5 Euro per day.
Bartholomäusstr. 95, Barmbek
Also I have not been in this one, but it looks very nice from images I have seen. As far as I know, in this bath no children are allowed exept family-swimming dates.
About 9 Euro per day.
Stadtparksee, Südring 5b
Do you like swimming in natural lakes? Then this might be a nice tip to cool down in summer. I love the atmosphere here. There is also an open air barbecue place and you can have drinks (also without going for a swim a nice spot in summer evenings).
About 2,70 per day
A special interest tip - for horse sport lovers: In Hamburg there is the most important German Race every year at the Horner Rennbahn. One week in June there are 2,400 meter races with horses from Germany and abroad. Special is that just 20 are allowed to start, and horses just are allowed to start once in their lifetime - with the age of three years.
The race takes place in Hamburg for more than 130 years and it is supposed to be the most important one in Germany, the highlight of the sports-year and known world wide. Also, it is one of the oldest races taking place somewhere else than in UK.
site was not very informative when I looked it up...
some infos on Horner Rennbahn in Hamburg, just in German
Some other links related to "Horses" in Hamburg:
trotting race club
horse fair taking place in Hamburg every two years, in 2008 from 18th-20th of April
Once a year (mostly in late summer) there is a big cycle racing in Hamburg where also the cycling "stars" take part. In 2008 it will be the 7th of September.
Here the official website (sorry, but not in English):
This is an interesting little sports bar on Friedrichstrasse just off the Reeperbahn close to the red light area. It’s a bit dark and dingy but has plenty of character, the main character being the ZZ Top lookalike owner (Hermann Osborne) who remarkably was running a packed bar on his own including delivering drinks to tables. There is a table football game that seemed very popular and the ceiling of the bar was festooned with football scarves from visiting teams. Good place for a no nonsense beer and to meet some interesting sport-minded locals.
A visit to the Millerntor stadium is a must for footie fans. Be warned, tickets are not easy to find, even considering they play in Regionalliga Nord (2006/7) games sell out weeks in advance. We managed to buy a couple on e-bay for a reasonable price.
Anyway, once you're there atmosphere inside is second to none and how a football game used to be in the UK when I first started going.
A local derby with Holstein Keil was won 2-0 by St Pauli, currently looking good for promotion back to 2Bundesliga.
The Sea Devils are Hamburg's team in the NFL Europe. They play home games in the impressive AOL Arena, which they share with top soccer club Hamburg SV.
Saw a game against the K?ln Centurions a 10-14 victory for the visitors. A creditable 15,000 crowd joined me on a below freezing night.
The Holsten CityMan Cooler Triathlon is a great race. In 2005 it was part of the ITU Triathlon World Cup. The swim leg takes place in the Alster. The bike leg is totally flat nearby the Elbe river and the run leg is around the Alster in a beautiful scenery. And the public? very active and they were more than 200 thousand applauding the athletes. Simply the best triathlon I've ever done
Equipment: Of course one needs all the gear to do a triathlon
Yes water skiing in Hamburg, believe it or not. No, you arent doing it in the Alster or in the Elbe but in the Neulander See (Neulander Lake).
Its also different because you dont need a boat to pull you through the water. They have cables strung up that are motorized which will pull you across the lake.
Its a little over a kilometer from the Harburger trainstation so one could walk there but there is also a bus, 49 direction Over that will take you most of the way.
Id tell you here but the prices are based on age and the temperature the weather is. May sound odd but they are open from March until October. Brrrrr.
Monday- Friday 12-til Sunset
Sat and Sun 10-Sunset
Equipment: You can rent anything you need there. Prices are on their website.
