    Hafencity

The "Hafencity" Hamburg is a waterfront development/rejuvenation project where - on a former Elbe Island - a new suburb with modern homes and offices is built, close to the Speicherstadt and the Inner City to the North. The project shall be finished in the 2020`s, a viewing tower allows a panoramic view of the building progress. The modern architecture here is stunning, a good place to stroll around. My favourite place: the "Magellan-Terrassen" with a great view of modern living quarters along a channel, and the Elbphilharmonie.

A new district of Hamburg has emerged from the death of the free port area. In the modern era of the EU the free port became less and less important, and the whole area was turned over for redevelopment. Money poured in and the district has been transformed by beautiful, and expensive, apartment blocks with impressive and varied architecture, which teeter over the river's edge as if they would fall in at any moment. There are also plans for offices, universities, and museums, with the whole construction culminating in the Elbe Philharmonic Hall, designed by the man behind London's Tate Modern. Jutting out into the main flow of the Elbe, like a defiant ship bow, it's going to look sensational when it's finally built.

HafenCity is an ambious architecture and city planning projetct next to the harbor and Speicherstadt (storey houses quarter). 50 new buildings have been planned, many of them have already been realized.
The Elbphilarmonie is supposed to become the new landmark of Hamburg. The foundation stone was laid in April 2007.
Many famous national and international architects are planning projects here. You can get a good survey in the HafenCity InfoCenter, entrance is free.
