Good art museum with many travellling exhibits, particularly famous for its collection of German romantic art of the 19th century. I was glad to be here to catch a superb exhibit concertning Caspar David Friedrich, one of the pioneers of painterly romanticism. (I have a print of his most famous work, "The Wanderer," hanging in my living room!) The Kunsthalle is the home of "The Wanderer," as well as several other of Friedrich's iconic canvases, and for the exhibit was also able to borrow Friedrich's works from other great collections in Berlin and St. Petersburg.

The basement of the Kunstalle contains a passageway connecting it to the neighboring Galerie der Gegenwart, a superior collection of contemporary art with special emphasis on modern German masters like Richter and Kiefer. Interesting "installations" - some of them rather silly, perhaps, but others quite creative.

This is an art museum with several different departments: painting in Hamburg in the 14th century, paintings by Dutch and Flemish artists of the 16th and 17th centuries, French and German paintings of the 19th century. And modern art.

The museum is near the central railroad station (and not far from the Binnenalster), but I have thus far never succeeded in going inside. Either I was too busy (on business trips) or the weather was so good that I preferred to be out cycling. So for the time being I’ll just post a picture of the outside of the building, as a reminder.

    Next: Deutsches Schauspielhaus (German Theater)

Of the classical modernists, Max Beckmann and Oskar 'Kokoschka' dominate along with artists from the 'Brücke' and 'Blauer Reiter' groups
(Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Franz Marc).
The fascinating work 'Der Goldfisch' by Paul Klee also belongs in this context.

The new Gallery covers the period following the second major period of upheaval in 20th century art (the first being abstraction in 1910), namely from around 1960. New artistic concepts were introduced, simple, everyday materials were used for the first time, and objects rather than sculptures were created, initially in Pop Art and its European variants, Fluxus and the Nouveaux Réalistes.

    Gallery of 19th century
Caspar David Friedrich ('Das Eismeer', 'Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer') and Philipp Otto Runge ('Die Hülsenbeckschen Kinder', 'Der Morgen'), which together form an incomparable ensemble highlighting the movement towards subjectivity in painting.
The Kunsthalle collection contains magnificent groups of works by Max Liebermann ('Die Netzflickerinnen'), Lovis Corinth and Edvard Munch ('Madonna'). and Eduard Manet.

    Gallery of Old Masters
Dutch seventeenth-century painting is represented by an early Rembrandt work ('Simeon im Tempel'), land- and seascapes by Averkamp, van Goyen, S. and J. Ruisdael, van de Velde and genre paintings by Jan Steen and P. de Hooch.

The Hamburg Kunsthalle is a stone's throw from the Hauptbahnhof. So if you happen to have a few hours layover, you can at least make it to this museum. They have wonderful collections, including my favorite painting of all time, Caspar David Friedrich's, Sea of Ice (or Arctic Shipwreck), 1823-4. (see photo)

Visit the Kunsthalle (Museum of Art). It's located just next to the Main Railway Station, so it's worth a visit even if you're just changing trains in Hamburg.
Fine collection of works from the 19th century, especially German romanticists like Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge and German impressionists like Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth.
A new building which was opened about two years ago now houses the collection of contemporary art which is also great!

Hamburgs most important art museum, with a collection featuring Medieval art, 17/18th century masterpieces, romantic and impressionist art and modern masterpieces. Located halfway between the Binnenalster and the Central Railway Station.

I'm not much into classics - I like more impressionism ... but it was astonishing to see really extraordinary pieces of work in live ... For the first time in Hamburg I realized how great were those painters ...
