Greeting people in the Hamburg area

You can say, "Moin moin", or just "Moin" to anyone in the Hamburg or its surrounding areas in the north of Germany at any time of the day, when greeting someone.

Even though it actually means "good morning", it can be used at any time of the day in this area.

Use it at night in Berlin or further south, however, and people are likely to look at you oddly.
