ROCOCO IN MINIATURE

by balhannah

If you want to see a marvellous display of Rococo in miniature, then a trip to Heidecksburg Castle at Rudolstadt is where you need to go. I went and saw the exhibition and thought it was wonderful!Manfred Kiedorf and Gerhard Bätz have created these miniature buildings with detailed interiors on a scale of 1 : 50 over the course of the past 50 years. There are 10 palaces, about 1000 figures and 1000 items of furniture, built in meticulous detail. The original idea for the two kingdoms of Dyonien and Pelarien was born more than 50 years ago in a role-playing game, which the artists invented in their youth and have developed to perfection up to the present day. So the fictitious planet of Centus is adorned with rulers’ residences, summer palaces, pavilions, a mausoleum and other authentic buildings which house hundreds of invented figures. Every item has a function and a history and even...

LUFTLMALEREI [FRESCO'S]

by balhannah

Bavaria - Germany is the place to go to see heaps of any type of building, painted in Luftlmalerei.Don't expect just old homes painted this way, because people have kept the tradition going and painted their new homes.Luftlmalerei, is a type of trompe-l'oeil painting that became popular in the 18th century. It means "air painting."Luftlmalerei was "discovered" by Franz Seraph Zwink in the 1700's. A lot of Luftlmalerei are Religious scenes, but I saw fairytales, and many different ones.Towns were really liked were......Mittenwald, Neubeuern, Oberammergau, and Ruhpolding. I think you could drive into any village in Upper Bavaria and find these beautiful homes. I saw many more than I have tips on, I just couldn't stop at every village and take photo's!

Berlin Welcome Card

by hopang

It is highly recommended to purchase a 72 hour Berlin Welcome Card plus Museum Island if you decide to stay in Berlin for a period of between three and five days. You are eligible to enter the five UNESCO world heritage site museums at Museum Island free-of-charge. Even though the terms and conditions for the use of the card state that you are entitled to enter one museum per day, there is no evidence on the card to prove that you have entered a museum that day. Total entrance fees for the five fantastic museums cost a total of 48.00 euros if you were to queue up to purchase your entry tickets on the spot. Warning: extraordinary long queues during the summer months especially entry to Pergamon Museum. You certainly avoid the long queues if you a holder of Berlin Welcome Card plus Museum Island. As a result you save valuable time too.You are also entitled to travel by public...

I shared a room with my cousins. I met my uncle and aunty and my cousins, Lucas, Jonas and Semina. My best memory of the trip was seeing my cousins and going to the zoo. I saw a giant walrus, a lion and a seal.

Interesting & informative travel books and..

by Trekki

I will list here a collection of travel books I found interesting and informative and different from the typical travel guides. Some, however, are in German only.1000 Gründe, in Deutschland zu reisen (1000 reasons to travel in Germany), Moewig publisher, ISBN 978-3-927801-82-0, 9,95 €, 800 pages. This may be one of these typical "list" books, and this was also what I thought when I saw it in the bookshop. But to my surprise it didn't list all these typical spots, all other Germany travel guides list but rather unusual ones. Interesting and fascinating. But in German only :-(... and websites. When I was looking for a youtube video about Marburg's town hall clock, I found youtube user Andrew Bossom (from UK), who lives near Frankfurt and has made several nice "A day out in..." videos. Here is his youtube list with videos about the rather well known cities of Marburg, Würzburg, Heidelberg,...
