by Dizzyhead

I guess everyony know his name - ADOLF HITLER. It is a shame in our civilation history that he could become Führer for Germany during 40th and drag Europe in a second world war. This man was an evil man, a man who has done so much damge for the world. Well, my memeory is not about him, which I am so happy about. Germany iis a beautiful country and have many tourist attrations to visit.

It's hard to find the perfect SIM card

by Kakapo2

-It is quite a challenge to get the right prepaid SIM card for a visit in Germany. To be honest, I cannot say if a really good one exists. Depending on your needs, you can be happy or bitterly disappointed. The latter was the case during my last stay. For just texting and making calls with your mobile phone you will not have a problem. Problems arise when you want a good SIM card for surfing the internet with your smartphone, iPad and/or laptop/netbook.I first went fort he seemingly safest option by choosing one oft he big providers which all have shops where you get help in case something does not work. These providers are Telekom (T-mobile), Vodafone and O2.What a mistake! As I have always been a Telekom/T-mobile customer and have also used their prepaid SIM cards on my visits since living overseas, I purchased a 10 Euro card which gives you 100 MB fast-speed internet, plenty of SMS and...

Berlin

by traveldave

Since 1990, Berlin has been Germany's capital, the first time it has held that status since the end of the Second World War. To this day, most people who lived through the Cold War remember Berlin as being a divided city, separated by the infamous Berlin Wall.Berlin grew up on the banks of the River Spree. It is not known when the city was first established, but there is archaeological evidence that people have lived there since at least 1192. The first written documentation of Berlin is from 1237, which is considered the date of the city's founding. In about 1440, Elector Frederick II Irontooth made Berlin the capital of the Magraviate of Brandenburg, and subsequent members of the Hohenzollern family ruled from Berlin until 1918, first as electors, then as kings of Prussia, and eventually as emperors of Germany. In 1701, King Frederick I moved the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia from...

Munich

by traveldave

The capital of Germany's southernmost province of Bavaria is Munich. With a metropolitan area of 2,610,000 inhabitants, it is Germany's third-largest city. The word Munich is derived from the Old High German term Munichen, meaning "at the monks' place," because it was originally a monastic settlement founded on the banks of the River Isar by Benedictine monks. The monastery was first settled by the monks in 777 A.D., but the city itself was not founded until about 1158. At that time, Guelph Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, built a toll bridge across the River Isar next to the monastic settlement, and a town grew up around the river crossing. In 1175, Munich was officially granted city status, and its fortifications were built at the same time. In 1180, Otto I Wittelsbach of Munich became the Duke of Bavaria, and the Wittelsbach Dynasty was begun. The Wittelsbach family ruled...

A beer costs three minutes' work - like 1991

by TomInGermany

It takes the average German three minutes to earn enough to buy a beer, exactly the same as 20 years ago, according to a study on Tuesday showing the euro has not eroded Germany's purchasing power. The study by the IW economic institute calculated the average hourly salary of a German living in the west of the country had risen by 45 percent and that the cost of goods and services had increased by 43 percent in the same period. "An hour of work can buy the same amount of goods than it could 20 years ago," the authors of the study wrote. They took as an example a bottle of Kölsch beer - a speciality from the western city of Cologne - "which then as now required three minutes on the production line or in the office." Nevertheless, the cost of other goods and services have changed over two decades. It takes five hours less work than it did 20 years ago to pay for a suit. In contrast, two...

ROCOCO IN MINIATURE

by balhannah

If you want to see a marvellous display of Rococo in miniature, then a trip to Heidecksburg Castle at Rudolstadt is where you need to go. I went and saw the exhibition and thought it was wonderful!Manfred Kiedorf and Gerhard Bätz have created these miniature buildings with detailed interiors on a scale of 1 : 50 over the course of the past 50 years. There are 10 palaces, about 1000 figures and 1000 items of furniture, built in meticulous detail. The original idea for the two kingdoms of Dyonien and Pelarien was born more than 50 years ago in a role-playing game, which the artists invented in their youth and have developed to perfection up to the present day. So the fictitious planet of Centus is adorned with rulers’ residences, summer palaces, pavilions, a mausoleum and other authentic buildings which house hundreds of invented figures. Every item has a function and a history and even...
