The capital of Germany's southernmost province of Bavaria is Munich. With a metropolitan area of 2,610,000 inhabitants, it is Germany's third-largest city. The word Munich is derived from the Old High German term Munichen, meaning "at the monks' place," because it was originally a monastic settlement founded on the banks of the River Isar by Benedictine monks. The monastery was first settled by the monks in 777 A.D., but the city itself was not founded until about 1158. At that time, Guelph Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, built a toll bridge across the River Isar next to the monastic settlement, and a town grew up around the river crossing.In 1175, Munich was officially granted city status, and its fortifications were built at the same time.
