The Palast der Republik

by traveldave

The dome of the Berliner Dom is reflected in the glass windows of the Palast der Republik. This five-story building on the Unter den Linden once contained the East German parliament (the Volkskammer). The building was open to the public and offered restaurants, a theater, a discotheque, sports facilities, and an auditorium with a seating capacity of 5,000.The Palast der Republik was closed in 1991 after it was discovered that asbestos had been used in its construction. The future of the building is uncertain at this time.

The Berliner Dom

by traveldave

Completed in 1905, destroyed during the Second World War, and reconstructed in 1973, the Berliner Dom, or Berlin Cathedral, was designed by Julius Raschdorff, and originally served as the private chapel and mausoleum of the Hohenzollerns, the Prussian royal family. The central dome rises to a height of 279 feet (85 meters).

Cold War Casualties

by traveldave

From the time when the Berlin Wall was erected in 1961, many East Germans found innovative ways to jump over the wall to escape to freedom. Unfortunately, many were killed while trying to escape. This picture was taken at a spot beside the Wall behind the Reichstag, Germany's former parliament building (which has since been restored and reinstated as Germany's parliament building), and shows the graves of some of those who died while trying to escape from East Berlin.

Rhine River

by nepalgoods

Rhine River is our longest river in Germany. It is 1320 km long. Some of our most beautiful towns can be found along the river: Heidelberg, Koblenz, Cologne. Hills with wide fields of grapes, with castles and forests , small towns and monasteries are typical for the landscape along the river. To get a really good impression of the beauty of Germany and Rhine you should book a river cruise!!Rhine River Cruises

Universal Suffrage

by nepalgoods

On Nov 12th 1918 the German women got the right to vote. Germany was one of the first countries to give women universal suffrage. And this is not even 100 years ago!!!!. I could not imagine how it is, to be always inferior to men and to be without this important right! Frauenwahlrecht in Deutschland

Modernity versus tradition

by DanielF

After WWII Germany was a country virtually torn to ashes. Since the reconstruction started, there has been a lot of controversy whether the old buildings should be redone in its previous shape or if they would rather erect new functionnal buildings that should show the regained strength of the country's economy. Ususally there is a mix of both tendences in most German cities, although some of them look into the future rather than into the past and others simply the opposite.

The Phoenix Bird

by DanielF

Germany combines the major industrial power in Europe with the traditions and landscapes that are the quintessence of the old continent. It has managed to reborn from its own ashes after the disaster of the last Great War and proudly assumes its role economic locomotive of Europe. The reunification of the country has brought a new scenario that has allowed, not without pain, to extend the achievements in economic and political terms of the Bonn's republic to the former GDR.

Some Simple Tips For German Life I Learned ....

by grishaV1

(for berlin anyway....)Shopping Always take a shopping bag with you because you never know when you are out and might need it. Better to have one or two of your own so you dont have to buy one at someplace you go.When you go to a food store, if you need to use a cart, expect to put a 1euro coin in for the usage or a token. You get it back when you put the cart back. If you go to secondhand clothing stores like I do, unless it on sale sale (very low) dont buy it the first time you see it. Wait until the price is lowered or a sale goes on. If its sold when you get back, I guess you dont need it anyway.Dont give up your coins, especially 2 and 1euro pieces, even if the clerk asks for them when making change. Save them for the transit system or shopping carts (or like me to give to some of the players in the Ubahn stations).Transit SystemSee above last tip, but remember to have change with...
