Studying and traveling in Germany

by josecarlos

When visiting Germany, you must absolutely go to Berlin. Despite the rain, the cold weather (for a mexican) and some wind, the architecture and charm of this place gave me the impresion that I was in a "living city".Permanently rebuilt, constantly moving, Berlin is not so expensive and has one of the best universities in Europe. I went to Frankfurt an der Oder, in the border with Poland, to study Human Rights at the Viadrina University. I met people I still stay in touch with. It was a very enriching experience, with people from more than 19 countries. I could appreciate the different cultures, but mainly to have always in my mind that, even if the conceptions of the world my vary from nation to nation, the mutual respect and the recognition of those differences constitute a value in itself...

Bavaria - Prussia

by nepalgoods

Germany is Germany only since a very short time, about 100 years now. Before it has been a number of separate states like Bavaria or Prussia. Until today people are more proud to be a Bavarian or a Prussian than a German.I personally don't like the rivaltry which results from this. I am just happy that I live in Europe.

Fly fishing

by Thuringia

One of the most common misperceptions of most Americans is that you can't fish in Germany, or the rules and regulations make it too difficult to even try. This is definitely not the case! Over the last four years, we have had the pleasure and privilege of both working in and fly fishing throughout Germany. The combination of fish, water, and access make fly fishing in Germany a must do for American business travelers, tourist, and United States military members. No it's not always easy, but with a little effort it can be done. Weblink: www.cybertrout.com/germany.htm www.fliegenfischer-forum.de

National Parks and Regional Parks (Natural Parks)

by Thuringia

In Germany there are 13 national parks, 14 biosphere reserves and over 80 regional parks. Nature protection is the responsibility of the federal states. Nature, however, is without borders. There is therefore a need for coordination between the states. This role has been taken on by the umbrella organization EUROPARC Germany (earlier known as FÖNAD), founded in 1991.Weblink: www.europarc-deutschland.de

Classicism (1770-1830)

by Leipzig

Characteristics:° Rivival of classic Roman forms ° Strict, rational forms° Pillars° Hardly ornaments The town of Karlsruhe is a good example for classic architecture. It was built as a a representative town in the 18th century. In the centre is a castle and a myriade of roads (in this case 32) stretch from the castle away. The distance between two roads is almost equal.

Tip Photo
Rococo (1720 - 1770)

by Leipzig

Rococo existed together with Baroque and shows similar characteristics:° Almost no strict forms, mostly “living” forms° Characterized by elaborate ornaments° Symmetric forms (specular at a centreline)Examples: Gohlis Castle, LeipzigSanssouci, Potsdam Sanssouci means without sorrow. It's one of the most popular sight in Germany and probably the best example for Roccoco style. I know this photo is not the best but of you are there you will surely see the symmetric form of the castle as well as the colorful facade with its ornaments.

A Wonderful People

by Bobsy

I found everyone in Germany very helpful and friendly. As one of the first foreign destinations I visited, I was a little scared about approaching people and doing the simplest of things, but I wouldn't hesitate to ask now.

Baroque (1620 – 1750)

by Leipzig

Characteristics:° Almost no strict forms, mostly “living” forms° Rich ornaments, forms like snails° Colorful° Symmetric forms (specular at a centreline)Examples:° Chateau de Versailles° Baroque centre of Dresden° Romanushaus, Leipzig° Old Exchange, Leipzig The house is named after the former Mayor of Leipzig, Franz Conrad Romanus. Built by Gregor Fuchs in 1701/04 for Mayor Romanus, who used funds from the city coffers to pay for the building. When this was discovered, he was sent by August the Strong to Koenigstein Fortress near Dresden where he died. The great German playwright Friedrich Schiller was known to frequent the café which now occupies part of the building. This Baroque building shows curved shapes but still has it's geometric form. On both sides you can easily find a symmetric centre. Usually Baroque buildings have rich colors and decorative elements.

Tip Photo
Renaissance (1500 – 1620)

by Leipzig

Characteristics:° Like Antique Roman style° Circles and rectangles are dominant° Strict formsExamples:° Renaissance Castle of Dornburg (Thuringia)° Tower of St. Kilians Curch, Heilbronn° St. Peter’s of Rome (Italian Renaissance) The southwestern castle of Dornburg was erected in 1539. In 1828 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent here some holidays. This castle is ideal to describe the Renaissance style. You see the strict forms and every part of the castle can be described as rectangle or circle. Also the windows are rectangular.

Tip Photo
Gothic style (1250 –1500)

by Leipzig

Characteristics:° Pointed archs° Pointed windows and doors° Steep/long towers° VaultsExamples:° St Mauritius' and St Katharina's Cathedral , Magdeburg° Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris (French Gothic)° Cologne Cathedral The origins of the St Mauritius' and St Katharina's Cathedral date back to 937. King Otto I founded a Benedictine monastery on this site. After a fire in 1207, the reconstruction of the cathedral was commenced in 1209. This new cathedral was the first building in Germany possessing a Gothic ground-plan. The tomb of Otto I lies in the church.Easily to see are the pointed windows and the huge pointed door. Also the characteristic long towers can be seen. The facade is not as plain as in the Romenesque epoch but still has no striking ornaments. The panoramic view below shows you the pointed archs and vault inside as well as the almost plain walls.Panorama view inside the...
