Romanesque style (950-1250)

by Leipzig

Characteristics:° Round archs° Very thick walls° Little windows and doors° Pillars° Hardly ornamentsExamples:° Worms Cathedral° St. Peter and Paul Cathedral of Naumburg (good example of Late-Romanesque style with some Gothic elements)° Aachen Pfalzkapelle and Cathedral (only some elements are Romanesque - the Cathedral has more Gothic elements)° Speyer Cathedral° St. Burkard Basilica, Würzburg Construction of Speyer Cathedral began around 1030 and it was consecrated in 1061. In 1980 the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is today one of the largest Romanesque chruches in Germany. You can easily see the characteristics of an Romanesque building. You see the almost plain facade without ornaments as well as the little windows and doors (little in comparison to churches of other epochs).

Black Forest

by Kate-Me

One of my fondest memories of the second trip I took to Germany (again, on a guided tour), was that one particular day, we weren't dumped off at one of the usual self serve restaurants....but rather here at this delightful chalet on the edge of the Black Forest. The food did cater to the tourists, but wasn't over priced, and I enjoyed my Black Forest Cake all the more because of it.I think there was also some kind of cuckoo clock museum upstairs. All very nice and interesting.

Driving Through the Countryside

by reon80

The single best thing I did in Germany was sit in a car and stare out the window as we drove through a hundred little villages and the gorgeous German countryside. Germany has a great highway system and if you rent a car, you can experience the best of things about the country--the tiny German villages. Every village we went through was the same -- a church with a tower, surrounded by homes with red roofing. My wonderful German cousin (who is my favorite tour guide of all time!!!!) explained how this shows the importance of the church in German life, and people today (outside of the cities, at least) still honor this traditional social setup. I loved when we would get out of the car and wander around a town and talk to people or see them going about their daily lives. I know this doesn't sound like an "exciting" thing to do, but it was so relaxed and beautiful and fascinating that it was...

Nice views from the Autobahn

by b1bob

Germany probably is the only country in the world where there are no speed limits on the highways. It is interesting to note that Hitler ordered the creation of the first "autobahns". They were made with concrete and that they therefore still last. On our way from Munich to Linderhof and Neuschwanstein, we passed by some wonderful scenery. In the photo, you could see Germany's highest point the Zugspitze (9721 feet, 2964 m.) off in the distance. Also nearby was Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics.

Second meeting With Stefan G.

by b1bob

The original plan was to go to Valence and stay with Luc in Charmes and visit both of my friends in Germany who happen to be named Stefan. Stefan Grönniger, whom I met in Koblenz 4 years earlier, had a shift in holiday schedule, so instead of Spain to France to two places in Germany, it was Spain to Dortmund to Valence to Göttingen. Starting on 27 July 1990, I left Madrid straightaway after my last class. I had a long, tortuous journey from Madrid's Chamartín station to the French border. For the first time in my life, I popped for a sleeper car. That was a big mistake. That compartment was so small you had to leave it to change your mind. I may have been thinner back then, but I was no less tall. You had to be a contortionist just to get out of bed and go to the loo without banging your head on the bunk or your foot on the ladder. We mercifully arrived to the Gare d'Austerlitz at 7.00...
