A Classless Society
The thing I think of first, is that Germany is truely indifferent to class. In a country where anybody can afford to drive a Mercedes Benz, and does, everyone is treated pretty much equally. This is a country that makes more of a distinction of how well you speak German, than what colour your skin is. In contrast to Britain, there are many German noble people who are nobodies just like anyone else. Preferred treatment is given in business, and only if you can pay for it. Germany is generally not uptight about things like - you're black; I'm white. The distinction is more like, you're foreign; I'm native. Foreign includes Americans and British. In this society academic creditials are much more impressive than wealth. A lot of funny things have happened to me since I moved here. I think the most amusing thing is meeting other foreigners in different parts of Germany. It always cracks me...
