The Berlin Wall

by traveldave

My most vivid memory of Germany was the Berlin Wall. It was designed specifically to prevent anyone from escaping East Berlin. The wall was 15 feet (five meters) high, and topped by cylindrical concrete which ran along the top, in order to prevent anyone from getting a grip on the top edge. It was painted white, so anyone who actually made it to the wall would be silhouetted and visible at night. On the East Berlin side was a patch of ground 300 yards (274 meters) wide which contained land mines, trip wires, listening devices, and tank traps. Armed guards patrolled the areas near the wall with attack dogs who were trained to kill. Guards kept watch from watch towers spaced at regular intervals along the wall. There were also television cameras covering the whole area in case anyone escaped detection from the guards and dogs. On the western side of the wall, there were no such barriers....

German history

by chris.hh

This is just generated from a forum replay - I did not edit yet... If you are interested in German, European, cold war history you definately should visit Berlin, as there are many site concerning this theme. Just in case this is not on your plan yet. Also in Leipzig, Dresden (former GDR cities) would be worth a visit. If you want to get some info on WW II you also might consider to visit Nuremberg which was the imperial town, or a concentration camp like for example Buchenwald (close to Weimar and Leipzig) or Dachau (close to Munich). Weimar is also is known for Goethe and Schiller, and the Bauhaus university (for litarture and architecture history interests). Maybe this site helps you for some more detailed info on German history and its places: www.germanplaces.com/germany/history.html

Germany's alcohol laws (age, time etc)

by Trekki

I don't know where this would fit best, so I have decided to add it to the general section. We have the usual age limits for drinking alcohol in public or buying alcohol somewhere (supermarket, gas stations, kiosks, etc). But since there is an increasing binge-drinking behaviour among the kids - as much as one can in the shortest time - the state of Baden-Württemberg has new laws out since March 2010. It is now forbidden to sell liquor during night hours (= 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) to anyone of any age. This however is only valid for off-premises sales, like in said gas stations, supermarkets etc. If a gas station has the licence to sell food for example, this law is not valid.Alcohol laws in Germany

Speeding on German Autobahn!

by Ruhrbuerger

I love fast driving on Autobahn. My max speed was 300 km/h with a Porsche turbo. Great! With my own car, a Honda Civic with 140 BHP, I often drive more than 200 km/h when travelling. It is right, there are also speed limits on the Autobahn or there is non but lots of traffic. If you just want to speed have a look for Autobahn away from big cities. A good speeding track is the A31 from Bottrop to Emden and back. Not many speed limits and often quite empty. An other good one is the A38 from Kassel to Leipzig and back. Worth a try is also the entire A4, especially between Cologne and Olpe and back, as well as Chemnitz and the Polish border and back. The A33 from Bielefeld to A44 (a bit further than Paderborn)and back is not long but quite good. All recommended tracks are with less speed limit parts and usually without much traffic. In my opinion the most important for a safe ride is not to...

In the Nagold Valley

by hunterV

Visiting the town of Nagold in the Black Forest area to the southwest of Stuttgart you can enjoy wonderful views. The town occupies a broad riverside meadow in the Nagold valley. It's an ancient city founded in the 8th century. One of the symbols of the town is this medieval hotel called 'Alte Post', a half-timbered building erected in the 17th century.
