Quiet Street

by hunterV

Having a stroll in the streets of German towns and cities is a must, too. This is a nice quiet street in the city of Balingen located to the south of Stuttgart. I would say it's just a typical German street which you could see in many cities.I enjoyed tye view and decided to take a picture of this quiet street.

Churches and Cathedrals

by hunterV

Visiting some of the modern and ancient churches that are very special and impressive.Driving about Zollernalb County located to the south of Stuttgart we discovered an ancient church, got out of the car and walked around it. The church is now just a monument of the past. No public worship is held there. But it still looks wonderful! visiting Cologne Cathedral;visiting the Evangelical Church in the city of Balingen located to the south of Stuttgart. The church was built in 1914 and represents modern German church architecture.

Kiel, North Germany

by hopang

We have been to the town of Kiel approximately five times, each time we travelled onboard M/s Stena Line from Göteborg, Sweden. Kiel has a lovely ferry terminal and a deep harbour. The town has a total population of approximately 250,000 inhabitants. Kiel is situated approximately 100 kilometers north of Hamburg. It is undoubtedly one of the main maritime centres of Germany. Kiel is great for its shopping district with numerous large shopping centres. That is the reason why we visited Kiel so many times from Sweden.Among the popular tourist attractions in and around the town of Kiel are St. Nicholas Church, Rathaus (Town Hall), Cultural Centre, Art Gallery, Naval Memorial, Botanical Gardens and several museums such as the Zoological Museum, the Shipping Museum, the Museum of Ethnography and an open-air museum. You may visit Kiel's official website for more information:-...

Difficult to read: Old Lettering in Street Signs

by christine.j

In Freiburg we saw the opposite from the street sign in Aachen. No new spelling rules, but street signs in the very old German lettering. It is nice to look at, but can be very hard to read especially for tourists or young people who haven't learned the different letters at school. If you're in doubt where you are, just walk to a bigger street close-by. We only saw the old lettering on signs of smaller streets.

Spelling Reform

by christine.j

In the 1990s some teachers at universities and civil servants in the ministries of education decided to reform the spelling rules. As it is usually the case with decisions made in the ivory tower, this reform had a very hard time when it was transformed into real life.Since then we've had several changes, from the new spelling to the very new and the latest, and since 2006 the absolutely latest spelling reform. As a tourist you probably won't need to know about that, but when walking in Aachen we realized how strongly the city council seems to feel : There are two signs for the same street, one using the old spelling and another in the new spelling.(Pictures 1 and 2)

Balkonia, Gardenia, Rasenna: Holiday Destinations

by Kathrin_E

Balkonia, Gardenia, and Rasenna are popular holiday destinations among Germans, especially among people who are on a tight budget. These destinations are comfortable and easy to reach and feel just like home. You'll get all the food you want and are used to. They do not require any visas, there are no baggage rules and no booking fees. In Balkonia and Gardenia wild camping is allowed, visiting is free. Rasenna often has excellent swimming pools in close vicinity but may require a small daily fee. Balkonia is also good for abseiling and bird watching. Gardenia, however, can only be enjoyed long-term if you agree to work. Also note that these holiday destinations are usually self-catered unless you visit one that is inhabited by willing hosts, which however means you won't have it to yourself. *Ahem*[/Nonsense modus off]These are synonymes for spending your holidays at home.Balkonia ->...
