My List of Gems

by Kathrin_E

My favourite places in Germany to visit? I am trying to find an answer to this.As you may have noticed, I am an art historian with a focus on architecture and like authentic historical buildings better than reconstructions.Few cities in Germany have not been affected by World War II. Few cities and towns have preserved an authentic appearance. I envy the Swiss with their well preserved old towns ewverywhere!Focusing on nothing but big cities is a common mistake by first-time visitors from overseas. They will be disappointed. Most larger cities and towns have been reduced to ashes and rubble in 1945 and rebuilt in more or less ugly post-war style with some reconstructions of historical buildings. To find old-town, "fairy-tale" Germany you have to visit smaller places. So here is an (incomplete and to be continued) list of cities and towns in this country that are the top sights to me....

World WarII - Sites and Links

by chris.hh

Germans are not proud of is their history especially in WWII. I started a collection of links and some important cities or locations that might be worth a visit if you are interested in this part of history. Somehow our history still influences us to a certain degree. I kind of felt guilty even as a young person whos father even was born after WWII. We learned a lot in school almost through all subjects of the activities of our ancestors - in history, politics, German, religion and so on. It took a long while until I could say that I feel good to be German. My granddad was in war as a soldier and after he turned 80 he started to talk about his experiences. Before we had the soccer games in 2006 you almost never saw a German flag (what people from the US might no believe...) but now since we are crazy for soccer - Germans dare to show their flags, too. But mainly in connection with...

Deutsche Hanse/Hanseatic League

by nepalgoods

In the middle of the 13th century merchants trading overseas joined together to form the Hanseatic League in order to pursue their economic interests together. In the course of time 70 major cities and 130 smaller towns joined the League, which covered an area from the Netherlands to Estonia and from Sweden to a line from Cologne to Erfurt and on to Cracow. The Hanseatic League's influence stretched far beyond these boundaries, and it maintained large depots and smaller trading posts from Portugal to Russia and from Scandinavia to Italy. The Hanseatic League had a significant say in business, trade and politics in northern Europe for over 400 years, until it declined in the mid-17th century. The Hanseatic League was founded in Lübeck, Schleswig Holstein, and expanded fast throughout the Baltic aerea.Famous an dstill very beautiful cities of the Hanse in Germany: Lübeck, Rostock, Hamburg,...

Dachau

by davequ

Turning off the romantic road from Rothenburg into Munich, I detoured to Dachau memorial site and spent the afternoon.Due to its "convenient" access from Munich, it is usually the only remaining camp most people see while traveling in Europe. While thought-provoking, a less "sanitized" memorial with a much more powerful impact and equally terrible if not worse history can be found at Auschwitz/Birkenau outside Oswiecim, Poland, though it is a bit more difficult to get to unless Krakow is on your itinerary. I'm forced to say I found Dachau to be imo too cleaned-up, and I found some misleading info and historical inaccuracies posted on some of the exhibits.I took no fotos, the pic here was taken during the liberation of Dachau by one of my fave female photographers Lee Miller - an SS guard floating in the canal.

Where to go in Germany...?

by chris.hh

This is an answer on that general questíon on where to go in Germany: I always give Hamburg as a tip to all the travellers from abroad. Not just because I love to live here, also because it is a great cultural city. If you are into culture, history you definately should have Berlin on your plan. If you want to get a little insight into Germany and the history even more because it it the place where East and West met. Great museums, huge city, lots of culture, music, clubs, art, history... Maybe you want to see Dresden and/or Leipzig - which are very nice citys in the Eastern part of Germany. Hamburg is far in the North in Germany with a huge harbour, and also one of the cultural metrolols of Germany. Maybe you like to have a look on my site for getting an idea. Not too many images but some. If you get it on you plan I can help you out with many tips. I rather like the Northern part of...
