Museums worth a visit (in Germany)

by Trekki

At a point in time I plan to write more about interesting and unusual museums we have in Germany. But this will need some time. However, in the meantime I have created an album here on my Germany page where I continuously add tips from VTers I come across. If you like unusual or special museums, please also read this album:Museums worth a visit in Germany.(this is not meant to be a real tip, as it is not based on my own travel experience. However, it is based on my virtual travel experience ;-)

Do people in Germany speak English?

by christine.j

This is a question which comes up in the forum quite often. It's a difference if you are a tourist or if are going to live in Germany. As a tourist, staying in hotels etc, dealing with people in train stations, airports or employees at tourist sites, you won't have any problem speaking English. Even the staff in small museums usually have some knowledge of English. If you want to live there, get work and rent an apartment, you should speak some German at least, or you'll run into problems. As soon as you declare your intention of wanting to live in Germany, you are expected to make the effort of learning at least some German. Employees in the city hall may speak some English, as may your neighbours, but for getting around in daily life it's much easier to speak some German.

Cheaper tobacco (cigarettes)

by merak

Prices for cigarettes have become abusive in Western Europe. In Germany you have to pay 4 Euros for just 17 Marlboro cigarettes. Anyway, Marlboro is testing out how dull people are. Because not the world's best tobacco is sold more expensive than other marks everywhere. In Germany there is an alternative to cigarettes: Declared as "Zigarillos" you find tobacco rolls whith filter like JPS for 1,70, others for 1,50 or Power for 1,15 at Plus discount markets. Penny also sells a Zigarillo mark.

Pillnitz, palace with a past

by iandsmith

Without "german-eagle", this is a place I may never have visited. Personally speaking, I can't thank him enough for the afternoon he allocated to us to show us around certain places in Dresden.I loved every minute of it and it's such a pleasure when like minds meet, especially when history, architecture and gardens are combined in such a display as one finds at Pillnitz. Walking towards the palace I had a great sense of aniticipation as I'd heard of Pillnitz but never dreamed I would see it this trip. I bathed in its glory and wallowed in its history.Yet another weekend palace of the nobles of a region; and somehow it is in these places that some of their eccentricities come to light.A chinese temple for instance and a camellia tree which blew me away. This tree is housed in its own enclosure and is one of only three brought over to Europe centuries ago. It is also the only one to...

Some recommendations on places to visit

by worldtrekker

Places I would recommend to visit: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Tuebingen, Burg Hohenzollern, Heidelberg, the Rhein region (Boppard, Ruedesheim am Rhein...), Berchtesgaden and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Munich, (Fuessen/Neuschwanstein/Hopfensee/Tegelberg), Bodensee (Lake Constance), (Dresden/Meissen/Schloss Moritzburg/Sachsische Schweiz(Saxon Switzerland)-hiking) . If you are in Berchtesgaden you might as well check out Salzburg, Austria as well. Near Fuessen it is fun to watch hanggliders and parasailers take off from Tegelberg - not sure if they are still doing this in October...

Shnapps

by donpaul77

Schnapps is something you must sample as you travel through Germany. Like with German beer, you will find local varieties. It comes in all sorts of variations. Some are dry and feel like they vaporize in your throat, some have subtle fruity flavors that stay with you. They all can warm you up on a cold night or give a boost to your evening. I'm not sure I would drink it as an aperitif, but certainly as a digestive.

Munich, Munich!

by VictoriaMB

Great city for architecture, museums, home of the Hofbräuhaus in Schwabing, great local specialty foods, and fun - Munich is the city to visit. Also, go visit the BMW museum if you like cars! Try the Weißwürste , Knödel, Münchner Wurstsalat, Brezen, and try several Weißbiers or Dunkles.

A City of Joy, Black Forest

by hunterV

I remember visiting Freudenstadt, a town in the Black Forest area, which is literally translated as "a city of joy".The city was built in the 17th century. It is famous for its chessboard town plan and gigantic market square which is literally square in shape. The historians say that the space was originally preserved for the Duke’s palace, but the building was never started. The market square is 219 x 261 m. They say it’s the biggest marketplace in Germany. There are arcaded walks all round the square where you can visit attractive shops or just stroll and window-shop.
