Umlaut Problem: Finding the right place

by christine.j

One problem with German names is the Umlaut, the two dots on a,o or u. If you can't type them, type an e after it, ae,oe or ue. This will also give you the correct spelling and will get you to the right town. Some major cities, like Munich or Cologne - München or Köln in German - can be found in some databases as Munchen or Koln. But most other places cannot, or they are confused with city names of a similar spelling. Don't just leave the two dots, but add an e to get you to the right place. So Munchen is Muenchen, Koln is Koeln etc.

Drinking Age

by christine.j

A question which gets asked often in the travel forum, what is the drinking age in Germany. The law - 16 for beer and wine, 18 for the hard stuff - hasn't changed, but it's being enforced a lot more lately. If teenagers want to have a beer or a glass of wine with their meal while being in a restaurant with their parents, no problem. Or if they want to go to a beergarden and have a beer while sitting in the sun, again no problem. If their parents don't object, they may even get an after-dinner brandy, but not when they are on their own. Most discos by the way are from 18 years on and this is checked. In other places they can stay until midnight, if they are on their own.The police have been enforcing this law more and more, since they have been several incidents when teenagers drank themselves into a coma. It's a different thing when they want to buy alcohol: If you look younger than 30, you...

Appreciating German Beer

by donpaul77

Germany, as you probably know, is home to an awesome beer culture. There are hundreds of breweries all over the country, many with a long history behind them (see my Weltenburger Kloster tip for an example). Beer can be enjoyed in a very local way, especially in the south. What I mean by that is that a local brewery will supply the beer for the immediate region. Often, you will only be able to enjoy a small brewery's beer if you are in their own restaurant or bar. Some of the larger producers do sell their beer country-wide (and globally), but generally, what you find on tap is from nearby. This is tremendous fun because you get to experience different beers in every region as you travel through the country. Some of the most intriguing beers are those brewed in monasteries. Many of these monasteries trace their brewing history back to the monks of the middle ages. I'm not sure if there...

Fairy tales

by DanielF

The Grimm Brothers are responsible, among others, for the fact that in the collective imaginary of fairy tales, German landscapes and towns are the ideal setting for the most famous children stories. German forests and valleys evoke thus the tales of good and evil that we have heard in our childhood. Another of the most popular holiday routes in Germany is the Deutsche Märchenstraße or German Fairy-tale Road. It links over more than 600 km Hanau (the town near Frankfurt where the Grimm brothers were born) with Bremen and passes by different locations and landscapes which are connected with traditional fairy-tales and popular legends.

Fachwerkhäuser

by DanielF

Half-timbered houses (Fachwerhäuser in German) are to be found almost all around Europe, particularly north of the Alps, but it is probably in Germany where this kind of construction has seen a greater development. A good supply of timber and lack of stone or the ability to work it explain such expansion. In addition this construction technique allows for a perfect insulation of the buildings and is perfectly adapted to the climate of the region. For those reasons, the timber-framing has continuously been used all throughout Germany from the Middle Ages to the XIX century (The only region where it is not so traditional is South Bavaria). The visible skeletal framings of the buildings are made of timber which is often carved and decorated in bright colours and elaborate designs. In spite of the destruction of war, more than one million half-timbered buildings have been preserved in Germany...

Tourist information easy to find

by ATLC

Tourist info on most German places is mostly very easy to find on the internet. You simply type www.placename.de and presto! Also, the tourist offices send you free information by snail mail, if you wish. I've done this often, simply filled out the online order form or sent an email with a request. A few days later I'd get a package with all sorts of brochures. FUN!

Romantic Road

by Sjalen

Germany is full of themed roads and none more famous than the Romantische Strasse, or Romantic Road, which runs from Würzburg in the north to Füssen in the Alps (by Neuschwanstein Castle) in the south, taking in loads of pretty smalltowns full of half timbered house along its way. The most famous towns are probably the very touristy Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber as well as Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen and if you feel that this sounds like your perfect holiday, you can read about those towns and many more at: http://www.romantischestrasse.de/

First time in Germany?

by Sjalen

For the first time visitor struggling to chose, I would say...go to the Rhine Gorge BUT pick your moments to avoid the worst tourist crowds. There are other equally nice areas in Germany but this gives the first time visitor the Germany he/she might have been looking for. Cliffs with legends and vineyards, half-timbered houses...On top of that it has great views of a huge European river and you can cruise on the river for relaxation. It is also centrally located if you have time to see more of the country.Another alternative is to go to Munich. See a big German city which can serve as a friendlier version of the other big cities and also gives you the opportunity to go to the pretty small towns along the Romantic road for that German feeling. Just be aware that this is not the only version of a huge country. Both of these destinations are quite touristy. I miss great German food and...

Telephone Services

by nicolaitan

Unlike many European countries, calling home from Germany can be very expensive. Cell phone plans, following unlocking of personal cellphones from the US and purchase of SIM Cards, can cost up to 70 cents US per minute. Prepaid calling cards, so economic in Hungary and the Czech Republic are great money savers if one has access to private land lines. From pay phones the costs are prohibitive. A typical card may offer several hundred minutes from a private phone or no more than 20 minutes from a pay phone. One can use a calling card from a hotel, but the hotel charges will obliterate any savings gained. As suggested by several VT members, we made our calls to the US from internet calling centers. At 0.30Eu for connection and 0.05Eu per minute, this option was the most economic we encountered. Yes, the internet places are often in somewhat seedy neighborhoods and the clientele not from the...
