Bad Mergentheim served as the home of the powerful order of the Teutonic knights from 1525 until 1809. Earlier during medieval times, the Teutonic knights had established themselves as the dominant power of a large portion of the Baltic Sea region. After the Renaisssance era began and the power of the order dwindled, the Teutonic knights used Bad Mergentheim as a safe haven to continue their medieval chivalrous practices. They continued to hold jousting tournaments well into the 18th. century. After Napolean conquered the region in 1809, he disbanded the Teutonic knights, and expelled them from their castle home. Yes, Napolean slept in the castle.
Photo #1 shows the castle courtyard and the main hall of knights. Photo #2 shows the tor ( gate ) of the castle as well as the tower and adjoining structures. Unfortunately the drawbridge which spanned the moat has been replaced by the stone bridge shown in the foreground. The architecture of the castle is Renaissance, although some Baroque modifications were made about 100 years after it was built. The castle now houses the Deutschordensschloss ( knight's order museum ). The museum does much justice to this great order of knighthood. The museum is open daily from 0900 to 1800. The adult admission price is about 4 euros.

Address: Eastern part of altstadt ( old town )
A city park is very nice place. There are many paths, where you can walk. There are situated some fountains. There is much water - small lakes, swallows. There is also a island on the lake, and on both sides there are bridges to it.
It's very nice place to rest.

The old town has kept its historical atmosphere - the streets are very narrow, so now you must be cautious while driving a car. Many of them are one-way streets.
Many cafes and cake shops makes it really great.
On the central squere is standing a city hall, but it doesnt look like it - it lloks, like normal tenement house, but is standing alone. In front of it is situated fountain with a knight standing on it.

In history of this city, very big role played Teutonic Knights. They have got now there their general base :)
The castle is very old, but is kept really nice. It's really worth seeing (if I find any photos, I'll show it to you :) )

All the main spa 'bads' are closed during the month of October-November , so best to avoid this little town during these two months...
Unique Suggestions: You can walk virtually everywhere inside the 'kurpark'so I would advise taking some nice long walks an enjoy the fresh pretzels and coffee afterwards in one of the many

This is gret place, where you can watch animals, but not any exotic ones. You can see animals form Germany: there are wolves, bears, lynxes, many birds (like owls for example). To some animals you can walk into their territories. You can for eample look from distance one meter into the eyes of owl, vulture, or some mammals.
You can also watch farm animals (for example dogs, which are taking sheeps to some place).
It's realy great.
You can get there driving from Bad Mergentheim to Crailsheim.

The whole region is known becouse of wine. One of the wineyards is situated near to Bad Mergentheim - in Markelsheim.
They are making sometimes trips around wineyard, and tell visitors about wines (this is ussually for bigger groups).
I must admit, that their wine is really good.
