    Bad Rappenau

BAD RAPPENAU IS KNOWN AS A "FLOWER CITY"

As I lover flowers, I was hoping to see some parks, especially the one with the "Horse in the Bath." We were too early though and nothing was open. I needed a map from the tourist office to find the parks.

Bad Rappenau has three parks - the Saline garden, the spa park and the palace gardens
The Saline garden is located on the site of the former Rappenauer salt production. When this closed down, it was decided to hold the State Garden Show 2008 here. From photo's I have seen, it looks a stunning garden of Perennials, shrubs, Roses, Grasses and Annuals.
The website will tell you all you need to know.
We did notice when driving around this city, that alongside the roads were flowers and more flower's, it really is a "garden city."

We actually passed through Bad Rappenau on our way to Bad Wimpfen. The two towns are approx. 5kms apart. I had seen photo's of this Castle so we made a detour into town to see it.

This is not the original Castle, an earlier one was built on the swamp here. When it came to building the new Castle in 1601, the builder used Oak tree trunks, which were embedded in the ground. Around the Water Castle is the lake/Moat.
In the Battle of Wimpfen in 1622, the palace survived, however, most of the outside buildings, like Barn's etc. were destroyed.

Now days, all is very peaceful! The Castle sits in Schloss Park, which has statues, gardens and walking paths. I walked around most of it, but found I couldn't enter the Castle. It now belongs to the city government and is used for cultural purposes. The popular event series "Art and Culture at the Castle" here offers cabaret, readings, concerts and more. During the summer months, the Castle Theatre holds performances and concerts.

The American Bald Eagle is the symbol for the Unites States. The eagle became the national symbol in 1782 when the Great Seal of the Unites States was adopted.
Beginning at the turn of the century, the bald eagle population dropped dramatically, and the status was upgraded to threatened. These and many other facts about many different birds are to be learned at the German birdwatch as well as actually getting those birds (eagles, owls, vultures etc.) introduced. The drive from Bad Wimpfen to this German Raptor Research Centre takes about 30 mns.

The German Raptor Centre is wellknown for free-flying of eagles and vultures. The variety of free-flying Raptors is almost unique in Germany. Large birds with two-meter a wingspan of about two metres, like monk- and griffon vultures, bearded and white-backed vultures can be seen from close. - The drive from Bad Wimpfen to this German Raptor Research Centre takes about 30 mns.
