Baden-Baden's train station is situated in the suburb of Oos. From there to the city centre it's some 5 kms - in other words: about one hour!
Do not try walking. The way is not dangerous at all but looooooong. You'll be on your feet for an hour along a boring street and be tired already before you even reach the interesting part of the town.
Take the bus instead. Buses depart every couple of minutes in front of the train station, and if you are travelling on a KVV ticket, it is valid on the bus. See my transportation tip.

It is an extremely long walk from the train station in Baden-Baden to the actual town center, or "Zentrum". There are signs for it, but it never tells you how far it is. I wound up walking it and it was a very very long walk and it was uncomfortably warm that day. Take any bus that says it goes to the Zentrum!

Watch out while driving in Baden-Baden. There is a pedestrian area (Leopoldsplatz) that is not very well marked as such, and one can very easily drive right into it! I got a ticket, it cost me 30 DM. Payment was expected right then, also. This also soured me on Baden-Baden. I'm sure the local police like to hang out here and ding unsuspecting tourists all the time!
