Good base to explore the Black Forest
Favorite thing: If you want to explore this area, I suggest you stay in a town called Gengenbach. It has lovely half-timbered houses, a historic walled town centre and is situated at the start of the Black Forest near Offenburg and Strasbourg. Good hotels, guesthouses and Inns are available and the town has lots of good restaurants. Check it out on:
Fondest memory: The town of Gengenbach has some good galleries and museums depicting the long history of the area. Once a year they highlight the Gengenbach Advent Calendar - the largest house advent calendar of the world which is worth seeing if in the area during the winter months. The area is also a wine growing region.

cuckoo clocks in the black forest
Favorite thing: we are very happy with our cuckoo clock. In the Black Forest area there are tons of stores to find them but we were fortunate to enter Adolf Herrs place.
Haus der Schwarzwalduhren (house of black forest clocks).
when we enetered we were greeted by a german woman who spoke excellent english. she filled us in on the options for our clock, if we found something we liked, and that we could have the clock signed by the craftsman. that sounded pretty neat.
while we were looking the craftsman himself came over to us and asked, in english, if we had any questions. we were able to mix and match many different things. he signed it AND we had our names put on a little plaque that he did up himself and attached it.
This was a great experience. They also ship around the world and give a guarantee.

you won't be sorry!
Find the views
Favorite thing: If you have never been to the area before (and especially if you don't have a car) I recommend that you stay in Freiburg and make daytrips up to Schauinsland or similar peaks for great views with easy access.
Fondest memory: I miss the clear mountain air and the great scenery with mountains and valleys.
