  • Take a walk along the Rhine and watch...

    If you come to Leopoldshafen and keep driving then you end up at the Rhine river. This is a popular spot for fishing, walking, buying local produce and in summer for having a beer or two sitting on the restaurant terrace. Opening times in winter are narrowed down.

  • Old houses

    This neat little house can be found in Leopoldshafen. If you go round the museum in the old city hall and down the little street then you may see it.

    This is the main street of Leopoldshafen. The museum is located there too. Around there in the side street you may find the odd gem.

  • Heimatmuseum

    This quaint little museum was closed when we were there. The building is the former city hall. The museum is open on Sundays only from 10.30 till 12.00 and 14.00 till 16.00. If you are a group you can arrange other times though.

  • Go for a walk

    There are some nice peaceful streches of a canal along which it is lovely to go for a walk. Local people also go biking or jogging along here or walk their dog.The photos are from my July 2006 visit.

    This is the main street in Leopoldshafen. As the Rhine River is not far (you only have to drive about 2 or 3 kilimetres down the road) most inhabitants of Leopoldshafen were fishermen.

    This was my first of many flammekuche on my trip. My hosts purchased the premade crust in France [only 30 km away!]. It is topped with crème fraiche, and sautéed onions and lardons. It was delicious!

    I was treated to two delicious dinners at the best B&B in town. One was tini58de's famous Chicken Simla -- the other included a wonderful flammekuchen as well as some delicious local potato noodles. Not a bad dish in the lot! And the wine was pretty good too :))) [Not to mention the company!!]

  • By ferry

    If you need to cross the Rhine river then you may take the ferry. For pedestrian prices start at 1 Euro. If you need the ferry urgently outside the timetable then prices start at 20 Euro. There is a bus stop near the ferry landing, but buses are rare. It's line no. 195 to the research center. The bus stop is called "Rheinfaehre".

  • By tram

    From Karlsruhe station it takes about 35 minutes by tram S1 to Eggenstein. You need a ticket for 3 zones. If you plan to return in 24 hours then you are better off to by a City ticket for Euro 4.20 or Euro 6.50 (for up to 5 people travelling together). Prices were valid in Dec. 06.

    Now this is an idea that I really love:one of the farmers/gardeners has planted a field of sunflowers and has a sign up that says:"Sunflowers help yourself - piece 50c"Not only is this field a fabulous sight to see, but I also love how much he trusts people!

    When walking through the forest in the Tiefgestade, you will find lots of bee-boxes. Since nature is very unspoilt here in the area, the honey is delicious!!

    Each year on the first advent weekend Eggenstein has its own little Christmas market. Our local VT hosts (tini58de, madschick, Jadefrau, Bernd_L) took us there this year for some mulled wine (Gluehwein).It is located conveniently next to Andreas Brauhaus on the big carpark.

    Sometimes cameras don´t do what they should do...sometimes they take fotos when they are not asked to take on, sometimes they do not.... ;-)....so please be very careful, try to talk friendly to your camera and she´ll do what you want.........

    In the Tiefgestade there is a pub called "The Pirate" - great place to have a beer after a nice long walk!!!But let it be just one beer - you will have to walk back from there!

    Well, I might have mentioned it before:actually EVERYTHING in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen is off the beaten path... But there are some spots that deserve this category more than others.There is this canal not far from our house, it connects the Pfinz and the Rhine river. It is a great place to go for walksor to go fishing. You do need a fishing...

    Since prehistoric times the banks of Rhine River were covered by jungle. Near Leopoldshfen you can still see the rests of it. High trees a growing here. They are protected and they can grow and fall and nobody is allowed to cut them.

    If you stroll through the woods around Eggenstein, watch out for mushrooms - there are plenty of them!The summer of 2003 was extremely dry, though, so this fall there are not as many as in the previous years - still enough for a nice little hors d'oeuvre!!!
