While the indoor part is somewhat up-market, the outdoor area is a self-service beer garden "in the Bavarian style", so if you have ever been to one of the big beer-gardens in Munich you know how it works. There is a difference, though. In Bavaria you are usually allowed to bring your own picnic lunch with you to the beer-garden, and here there are signs saying that this is not allowed. (I suppose this is a cultural difference between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.) Second photo: Part of the self-service outdoor section is equipped with reclining garden chairs. Third photo: This part of the beer-garden has wooden chairs and tables, with the river in the background, as well as a bridge with a tram going across it. Leave a Comment

This traditional inn can look back on a long history - first mentioned in 1680. It is located in a quiet rural suburb in the East of Freiburg near the Dreisam river. Large beer garden, tall trees providing shadow. Very cosy dining rooms. Service was top, food outstanding. Better make reservations for dinner.
I opted for the three-course menu – free choices from the menu list! A Cremant d’Alsace with orange juice as aperitif. Not ordered, and not charged came brioche, ricotta and olives. First course was a green salad with asparagus and strawberries plus Italian dressing (very good). Main course was beef steak (medium) with roasted potatoes and French beans (very tasty). I had a local red wine (Pinot Noir) and mineral water. Dessert was Tiramisu with strawberries. An espresso finished the meal. The bill was 35 Euro incl. tip. You can eat little snacks the whole day at this Bistro like sandwiches and tapas - but the reason to visit this bar is its breakfast! It's every day, but the best choices you can make on sundays (until 6 pm). They serve everything you can imagine (including fish and seafood), when you choose the breakfast called "Europa" - for only EUR 8,00 incl. coffee and fresh orange juice. They offer ca. 15 different sorts of coffee from all good coffee regions and in countless ways of preparation...worth a visit! But also here the waiters aren't too fast...
Breakfast "Europa" with several sorts of sausages and cheeses from different european mediterranean countries, seafood and so much more...and great coffee! Are you like me? - You have a hard time to decide where and what to eat and you prefer to look around to see what the restaurants have to offer. Well, then the Freiburger Markthalle is the right place for you! Under one roof, you have access to cuisines from all over the world; Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Italian, French, Indian, American, Turkish... Take your pick...or if you like German food, and beer for that matter, go directly to Martins Bräu, Freiburg's oldest guesthouse brewery! This small and cosy cafe/restaurant serves excellent food at nice prices. There's quite a selection of dishes to choose from. The cuisine is international, with strong German influences. Beware - the portions are enormous! Adding to the atmosphere is the great mix of people; everything from school children and students to families, couples and businesspeople. Cafe Legere is a very popular place, so if you want to be sure of getting a table, make reservations!
'Spaetzlepfanne' (similar to casserole). Small pieces of meet mixed with onions, bell peppers and spaetzle (the German pasta) in a creamy white (wine?)sauce, overbaked with a thick layer of cheese, everything served in a pan! 'Blinis' (Russian pancakes) is another favourite of mine! You stand around small tables, have your coffee and croissant, sandwiches/baguette with ham, salami and tomatoes and stuff or even cake or pastry. Excellent quality, very friendly folks, familiar atmosphere. Leave a Comment

This is not really a restaurant - it is a place where you can taste and drink a glass (or more) of local wine. They offer tables and seats in front of the house with great view of the cathedral and the Muensterplatz. Buy a glass of wine, drop on a seat in front of that house and eat your brought food (like the salami, cheese and baguette from the neighbouring food market)! There is no special restaurant at the Muensterplatz to recommend - on the northern front you'll find some with excellent view of the cathedral, tables in front. Of course they are a bit touristy, but I found it to be very nice to do some people watching there. :-) Food and service were quite good.
I had very good lunch: Maultaschen (a local specialty, stuffed noodles) with spinach and a glass of white wine from the region (Pinot gris). Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: Northern front of the Muensterplatz

According to my fiancé, (and he is German so he should know!:-)), the best Bratwurst you can get in Germany, is the one you can buy at the market in Freiburg!
