Skiing close to Freiburg im Breigau is best at Feldberg, it is the highest mountain of the Black Forest / Schwarzwald, and even when all other places dont have enough snow, Feldberg will have snow enough to do so. At Feldberg you will find plenty of large hotels, a cablecar and various chair-lifts
All of my pics are done in winter 2006/07, when all of Europe had a very mild winter and just a bit of snow for just a few days at all.
Equipment: Skiing equipment is for rent there, in cars that you did not bring your own.

For all fans of Ski-jumping there is a place rather close to Freiburg, where you can watch the training of the german Ski-jumping-elite: Hinterzarten is about 40 minutes by train or by car from Freiburg and there will be various competitions every winter and you may even be able to watch the training of famous ski-jumpers like father and son Thoma, who live in Hinterzarten and won several international competitions and medails at olympic games. - see their webpage below !
Equipment: In most cases you will just WATCH that sport and not be able (or daring) to jump yourself ! In case that you really dare to try it yourself, you will also find a place to rent the equipment !

The Freiburg "Icebirds" are one of the main sports attractions of town. Since 2000 they play in the highest German division and increased their performances ever since.
They play in a tiny hall, but the average crowd in Freiburg is top of the league (1,000). The atmosphere is great and very cozy. The parents of the players bake cake and sell it during the games - come early to get your piece of it :)
The season goes from october to april. Dont expect some fake NBA show, but girls who like their sports and do their best :)

In this stadion you can watch 1.Bundesliga games of german soccer. Freiburg just started again in the first Liga after one year in the 2.Bundesliga. I think they play a very attractive football. It is one of the clubs with only few money, especially comparing with clubs as Bayern Munich or Dortmund. Nevertheless they have a very good team.

Dreisamstadion (capacity 25,000) is the home of SC Freiburg or SCF. The team was one of the biggest surprises during the 90'es when it achieved its first ever promotion to the topflight. Before getting relegated again in 1997 the team one time was close to win the league. In 1998 the team got promoted again, playing even in Europe in 2001/02 (losing to Feyenoord which eventually won the UEFA Cup). The same season SCF was relegated again in a shocking fashion. Anyway after only one year Freiburg is back in Bundesliga now.
The funny thing Freiburg did all this with one manager, and did all this because of this manager: Volker Finke. He's the brain of SCF. Before he came Freiburg was nothing, now they are a brankmark known for youth development and honest football.
Dreisamstadion offers still some "stands" which are quite cheap (5 to 10 €). Of course you can also take a seat (50 €). But get your tickets well in advance. Most games are sold out two weeks before kickoff.
Equipment: Well ... don't bring anything with you it's forbidden ;) Of course you can take your photo with you to take pics, but everything you could eventually throw on the pitch is strictly forbidden. You can buy food and drinks inside the stadium ...
