Historisches Kaufhaus by Annalisa-Lucia ....built between 1500 - 1600, it was a (beautiful!) place for the administration of market...and was used as a warehouse...the people of Freiburg say, it is the oldest warehouse of Germany, but even if it is not - it is surely the most beautiful! Today there are mostly classic concerts in this wonderful surrounding. Leave a Comment Address: Muensterplatz

Houses at Muensterplatz by Annalisa-Lucia ...a lot of beautiful old buildings which surround the cathedral, like e. g. the "Alte Wache", which is today used for selling wines of this region and many other nice houses in which are restaurants, bars and hotels located. Wonderful to sit at one of this restaurants - outside, when the weather is good (it's more often sunny weather there than at any other place in Germany!!!) - with a view to the church and the market in front of it (mon - sat from 7 am - 1 pm) and all the people strolling around there and enjoy a "Flammkuchen" and a good wine from this region! cathedral seen from the Greifenegg restaurant by german_eagle The cathedral is *the* landmark of Freiburg (and the region!). The construction started in 1200 (in late Romanesque style) and was finished 1513. From 1220 on the style of architecture turned quickly to Gothic, so the cathedral appears as a Gothic masterwork. When I visited large parts of the facade, the famous portal and the tower were under scaffolding and netting. This may last till end of 2004. Most stunning parts of the cathdral are the tower, the western portal and the high choir. Please see my following tips for more information. Since I could not take pictures of the western portal, here are some short notes on that sight: after passing a small hall with sulptures depicting the smart and dumb virgins and with - very rarely seen - figures symbolising the seven free arts you approach the main (western) portal. The 5 metres high wooden door is framed by a program of figures depicting the genesis. It begins with Adam and Eve and finishs with the apocalypse in the tympanon. Absolutely fantastic works of medieval art. Leave a Comment Directions: Muensterplatz, in the old town

 1. City Hall Square on a holiday afternoon by Nemorino, 3 more photos Freiburg has an attractive Old Town -- actually a partial reconstruction of the old city center that was destroyed during the Second World War -- centered on the Rathausplatz or City Hall Square. Second photo: The City Hall in the morning. Third photo: The City Hall at night. Fourth photo: Some of the streets and squares in the Old Town still (or again) have little gullies full of clear running water diverted from the Dreisam River. These gullies, known locally as Bächle or little brooks, were used in the Middle Ages for the horses to drink out of, and as a source of water for fighting fires. Nowadays they are mainly for decoration and help provide a pleasant micro-climate during the summer. Local tradition has it that if you step into one of these Bächle by mistake you are destined to stay in Freiburg and marry someone from here. Leave a Comment

These banners on the front of the theater are all quotations from a resolution passed by the Freiburg City Assembly on January 30, 2007, asserting that Freiburg understands itself as a cultural city and intends to further develop itself as a city of the arts. The reason for displaying these quotations is that a mere two months later the city council has proposed drastic budget cuts for all cultural institutions in Freiburg, including all the museums and the theater. At the end of the performance of Massenet's Werther, the baritone Matthias Flohr interrupted the final applause to read out a statement urging people to sign a petition opposing these budget cuts, which many audience members did on the way out. Freiburg is so far the only large German city to have elected a member of the Green Party as its mayor. Without going into the details of local politics, I think it would be fair to say that having a Green mayor is highly beneficial for the central issues of city planning, transportation policy, pollution control, ecology and regenerative energy use -- but apparently not so beneficial for the city's embattled cultural institutions. Second photo: Another quotation, affirming the need for motivating conditions for the arts and artists. Third photo: A third quotation, in which the City of Freiburg commits itself to preserving its central cultural achievements, offerings and institutions. Leave a Comment

This "Schwabian Gate" is at the southeast corner of the Old Town. It was first built around the year 1200, and has been redesigned several times since then. What you can do here is lock your bike to one of the bicycle stands, walk across the covered bridge to the other side of the road and from there climb up the hill called the Schloßberg. Second photo: Bicycle parking. Third photo: The covered bridge across the road. Fourth photo: If you don't feel like walking all the way up the hill, there is a free elevator that goes part way up, courtesy of the restaurant Greiffenegg Schlössle, which also has a nice beer garden up on the hill. Fifth photo: This tunnel is the entrance to the free elevator. Leave a Comment

View from Schauinsland to the Feldberg by german_eagle After so much sightseeing in the city you might feel tired and maybe look for a bit of nature - the short trip to the Schauinsland mountain is the answer! Freiburg is located right on the foot of the Black Forest, a mid-range mountain chain. The Schauinsland is considered to be Freiburg's "Hausberg". With its elevation of 1284 m it is quite a remarkable difference to the city. The Schauinsland is easily accessible from Freiburg: I took tram No. 4 and then bus No. 21 and arrived at the valley station of the Schauinsland cable car after 30 minutes. I had a discussion with the staff – they did not want to accept my REGIO – card offered by the hotel, which is good for a reduction on the cable car fare. After five minutes arguing I finally got the reduction – paid 7.70 Euro in spite of 10.50 Euro standard fare (return trip). The cable car ride was quite long and enjoyable. I walked to the viewing tower, about 15 minutes. The panoramic views were fantastic: Feldberg (1453 m) and Belchen (1414 m) as well as Freiburg. The air was not dry enough that day to see the Vosges mountains or even the Alps - bad luck. There is also a number of other tourist stuff offered: a tour of the former mines, sports activities like biking etc. Leave a Comment

The Freiburg University of Music was founded in 1946. The current building, on the east side of the city, has been in use since 1984. This is a good place to go for free or very low-priced concerts of classical music. Admission to most of the concerts costs all of six euros, and just half of that for students. Second and third photos: Statues in front of the Music University. Leave a Comment

Kornhaus at the northern side of Muensterplatz by german_eagle The Muensterplatz square is IMO the most beautiful square of Freiburg. Not only that the cathedral towers up in the centre of the square - it is also surrounded by townhouses with magnificent facades. The best reason to visit the Muensterplatz, though, is the daily market (see my local customs tip). Not to miss are also the beautiful Georg fountain (1935) and the Fischbrunnen (fish fountain) from 1483, a work of Hans von Basel. Leave a Comment

Schwabentor (outer side) by german_eagle The city gate called Schwabentor was built around the year 1200. Originally it only reached the height of the adjoining townhouses, but in 1901 some storeys were added. Somehow it was a tribute to the upcoming tourism - the city gate looked more "picturesque" then ... After WWII, in 1954 a bit of the addition was deconstructed, so the gate has a "decent" height now. You better have a look at the nice fresco (1642) at the inner side of the city gate. It tells the story of the rich Swab who wanted to buy the city: The money what he had brought in a trunk was only stones - his wife exchanged it before he left home :-) Leave a Comment
