Hagnau Things to Do

This narrow column has many figures of the Swabian sculptor Gerold Jäggle. Wondering about the name of the column? I did, until I read it tells the story of Hagnau and its inhabitants based on the tale "Schneeballen vom Bodensee“ (Snowballs from Lake Constance) by Heinrich Hans jakob.

The main part of the sculpture is about Jakob's conversation with the sacristan known as Kibele. It was with Kibele that he walked the shore of lake Constance, stopping sometimes to go for a swim, although Kibele never joined him.

Looking at the column, I could see two figures, both engrossed in conversation as they were walking. What were they talking about? Their thoughts are what is represented on the column. Featured are two princes, the duchess, the village tailor (in the book there are three different tailors), the French, a treasure hunter and vintner. In miniature are traditional costumes, represented is the Schussenrieder Hof, the church and the Gasthaus zum Löwen, these frame the sculpture.
The fishermen of Lake Constance, whose lives are described in the chapter with the two princes, are seen at the bottom of the sculpture.

On one of the walls in St. John the Baptist Church is a lovely statue of the Mary holding baby Jesus.
Surrounding the statue are many old paintings of the "Mysteries of the Rosary," a prayer which focuses on the life of Christ from the Scriptures.

The beads of the Rosary are divided into five sections, each section representing an event from the life of Christ. Each of the five events become one of a set of 4 Mysteries which focus on an important part of the life of Christ. When praying the Rosary, each day of the week is assigned a set of the mysteries to pray for that day.

The four Mysteries are - Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, Glorious

The Salmannsweilerhof may is the oldest house of Hagnau. This old building once belonged to the monastery Salmannsweil, (Salem) now it is privately owned and can easily be viewed from the gate. It was built in 1568, from rough hewn sandstone, imagine building walls 2 metres thick! Who-ever owns it now had quite a large vegetable garden growing.
