    Zum Ritter St Georg

    Hotel zum Ritter St Georg

This building (now a hotel and restaurant) dates from 1592 making it one of Heidelberg's oldest treasures. Built in late German Renaissance style, its original owner was cloth dealer Carolus Belier. I would guess that it would be an amazing place to stay as it is within a stones throw of most of Heidelberg's attractions. Maybe when I win the lottery...

    Knight St George...

This is a very distinctive building which I believe is one of the oldest originals in Heidelberg. It was built by a Huegenot in the 1590's and is named Zum Ritter Sankt George. Today it is a hotel with a very popular restaurant attached. It stands right across from the Holy Ghost Cathedral in the Marktplatz and will attract your attention from just about any point in the square.

    Impressive Renaissance building, isn't it?

One thing I love about Europe is it's long history and all the beautiful architecture that has survived thousands of years through war and succession.

Der Ritter built sometime around the 1500's is a beautiful example of such architecture. The building, whose actual name is "Zum Ritter Sankt George" named so because of the statue on top of the building, is one of the most impressive buildings to survive war and succession.

This Renaissance building does stand out from the rest of the buildings and you won't be able to help but gawk at its beauty.

Its formal name is Knight St George (Zum Ritter Sankt Georg) after the sculpture at the top, but it is known as der Ritter and is the most impressive of the houses in town to have survived the Wars of Succession and therefore a splendid Renaissance building. The house was built by a French architect and it is especially the facade with all its ornaments that is fantastic.

    Probably the oldest Private Home

Probably the oldest 'Bürgerhaus' (private home) and most photographed building, next to the castle and old bridge, Zum Ritter Only very few houses of Heidelberg were to survive the demolitions during the Wars of Succession. In the history of German architecture, it is considered to be one of the most impressive monuments of the late Renaissance period. The house was erected in 1592 by Charles Belier who had emigrated from France to Heidelberg.

Built in 1592 this is Heidelberg's oldest house. Have a close look at the detailed renaissance facade when you stop here.
