PHILOSOPHENWEG is a "path of philosophers". A nice walking area on the hill opposite to the castle.

On the photo you can see groups of students of the HD University who have studies in outdoor classrooms ;-))

Philosophenweg is a foot path on the hill across the river from the Altstadt. The climb up isn't easy and can be slippery when wet, but it's worth the effort to have a breathtaking view of Heidelberg at the end. It's no wonder why all those philosophers wanted to walk there!

Directions: From the Atstadt, cross the river on the Alte Bruecke (old bridge). Follow the sign "Philosophenweg" and walk up the hill for 15-20 minutes.

The "philosophen weg" is a great walk path on the hill situated on the other side of the river that offers you a breathtaking view on the old town of Heidelberg. Its nicest part is situated between the two main bridges of the town.

This is a great way to get the postcard type pictures of the castle and town. It is a long walk up the hill and not an easy one, especially with a 4 year old on your shoulders, but the walk is worth it. If you walk across the Altebrucke and turn left, you should see a sign pointing the way to the 'philosophenweg'. Make sure to go here first, as you don't want to make this climb after a day of wandering around the town.

Whether the Philosophenweg (Philosopher's Path) really inspired the likes of Nietsche, Kant or Hegel is a matter of debate. But anyone who takes this path will certainly see Heidelberg from another angle. A steep ascent takes you up to Philosopher's Garden, an idyllic oasis with fantastic views of the old town. The route is lined with memorials of famous poets and philosophers;a perfect place for night owls to take a stroll and enjoy the breathtaking view of the city lights crowned by the illuminated castle.
If you walk the philosophers way you will see many intresting sights like the one shown above.
