Of course before I went to Karlsruhe I read several VT pages about the city, and on Don / Nemorino’s page I was particularly struck by his account of the 48 signs erected around the city with these quotations on the theme of justice. I was really pleased that I got the opportunity to see them, one near the theatre (main photo) and many more in the Square of Basic Rights in front of the Schloss (photo 2). Don’s tip is the only place where I have read much about them, and I don’t want to duplicate it or steal his hard work, so please click here to read what he has to say. He has kindly agreed to let me use his very good translations of the two signs I photographed: Main photo: If someone has a Jew hidden in his basement, and the Gestapo comes to the door, would that person be allowed to lie? Kant would have said NO. Today we fortunately say that the rights we publicly support can in some cases – in the Nazi period for example – justify suspending the rule against lying. In this case one must lie, or should do it. Second photo: I am from here, I speak Croatian. My child is German and my husband is French. We are all Europeans. I would rather go to court here than in Croatia, because here I know the laws. Everything which is foreign is so in part because I know less about it. Knowing the law is a part of one's identity. Here I can defend myself.

On arriving in the Marktplatz on the Saturday morning of our visit, we thought for a moment that there was a building on fire somewhere, as there were many fire engines parked there, more arriving with sirens blaring, and we could even see some smoke. But it turned out that this was an event to promote the work of the city’s fire department and fire volunteers. There were various demonstrations, including entering a smoke-filled building; tall ladders to be climbed by brave youngsters wanting a view of their city; a crane to operate which lifted a car high above the square. The sight that particularly caught our eye was a 1905 fire engine (photos 2 - 4), and when we were told it was still functioning and would be demonstrated in a few minutes, we decided to stay and watch. The demonstration drew a big crowd, although perhaps some were as interested in the volunteer firemen as they were in the engine they were operating ;) First the body of the engine was filled with water from a hydrant. Then the yoke that in the past would have attached it to the horse was removed, and slotted across to form a handle, which the men then pumped up and down to force the water out through the (slightly leaky) hose. You could really get a sense of how hard it would have been to fight fires in those days, even more so than now. The whole event appeared to be a great success, and must certainly have achieved its aim of raising awareness of the work of the firemen.

Each year in summer time, a great festival takes place in the Guenther Klotz Anlage. There are lots of stages and great music to hear. The best thing of all: You don't have to pay a fee. But please drink and eat there something. All their costs are paid by this. The date for 2005: 22.-24.07.2005 Leave a Comment

There is a shop here that will buy used children, particularly those who disobey their parents and/or do not do their chores at home. They then sell them onto travelling circuses or made to work in salt mines. If it helps you parents at all then save and print this tip and show it to any misguided offspring you may have. Then just mention a one-way ticket to Karlsruhe. My Mum always told me she would sell me back to the Gypsies (note the profit element). I always behaved, did my chores and kept my room tidy. Karlsruhe has a fantastic recycling program in place. They have receptacles for brown glass, white glass, green glass, plastic containers, even batteries. As I was walking around town admiring the environmental efforts of the local citizens I realised I had some paper I wanted to throw away. Then the trouble started! In some areas of the city just try and find a normal place to throw away your paper! I walked about 3 kilometres before I found somewhere to thro my humble piece of paper. Leave a Comment

carnival parade by tessy On carnival, there is a parade in Durlach - on sunday, 2.11 p.m. I liked it a lot, because it is a nice mixture between tradtional carnival from the Black Forest and the carnival from Rheinland. The big parade in Karlsruhe takes place on tuesday. Leave a Comment

by Kathrin_E Carnival in protestant Karlsruhe doesn't have an original tradition. Today's carnival consists of activities in Rhineland style, thus imported, and some groups from the Catholic villages South of the Alb who do alemannic Fastnacht. The result is a mix which isn't actually convincing. The main carnival parade takes place on carnival Tuesday afternoon from 2 p.m. and runs through Marktplatz, Kaiserstraße and Karlstraße. Since no barriers keep the crowds out the huge carriages get stuck every couple of metres, and the parade takes AGES. Some decorated carriages show inspiration, very few are actually funny, most are just trucks with painted canvas cover and some people with the respective club's jester caps who throw sweets into the crowd. The tiny alemannic groups in between seem rather lost. In spite of all this the streets of Karlsruhe see a hundred thousand or more spectators that day. I'm not among them. I've been once and won't go again. Since I'm a fan of the alemannic Fastnacht I rather travel to places like Freiburg, Villingen, Rottweil, Elzach, Überlingen etc. to see the 'real thing' - my pages on these towns show you more.

From November 28 until December 23, you will find a huge Christmas Market on the Market Square. There are dozens of stalls with either little gifts, sweets, gluehwein (hot wine with spices) or Bratwurst - and be sure that there are hundreds of people around as well! In 2004 we started our VT Gluehwein meeting tradition, which was a lot of fun and which in 2006 even had international guests visiting from abroad: Natalie from England, Ingrid from the Netherlands and Sonja from Switzerland (apart from our two American VTers who live in Frankfurt...). In 2008 were were happy to welcome attendees from GB, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Germany! So, if you would like to join us in 2009 - feel free to drop me a line! Leave a Comment

Sean Tracy at the Höpfner Burgfest 2003 by Madschick For the past 20 years there has been the Höpfner Burgfest on the weekend of Pentecost . Höpfner is a famous brewery here in Karlsruhe and it is located in an old building, that almost looks like a castle (=Burg). And the owner used to be a VT member, too, but has not been online for a year or so now... For four days, from Friday till Monday you have one big party with lots of beer (of course), food stalls and life music! It is a fabulous event and has been visitd by more than 40 000 people every year!! The entrance is free - no dogs allowed! . Leave a Comment
