Hilda-Brötle by Trillian2005 This is the chocolate version (the other version is sprinkled with icing sugar) of a local, round specialty called "Hilda-Brötle". The pastry consists of two layers of shortbread cake filled with strawberry or raspberry jam. Delicious and sweet - but not too sweet. The perfect combination. Gossip has it that the pastry was named after Hilda who was the baker's girl-friend. Not his wife, because his wife's name was Berta. Hilda is one-sidedly chocolate-coated, which could either be the right or the left side depending on the rotational degree of the plate. You can find it in almost any bakery in and around Karlsruhe. It costs between 60 - 70 cents. There's also a cookie size version of both Hildas - price according to weight. I'd suggest the pastry version, as it's a better deal. Kaiserstraße, the street crossing the city centre from West to East, is the main shopping street in Karlsruhe. Some stores are locally owned businesses, most of them belong to the same chains you'll find everywhere else, too. The street is a pedestrians' area, but many trams run along here, so take care. Politicians want to spend (read: waste) a horrible lot of money to build a tunnel underneath Kaiserstraße for the trams. We're facing some 15 years of construction works in the heart of town starting in 2009 or 2010. The chains will go away in the meantime, the local businesses will be ruined. These super-ambitious plans are a big affair in town. There would be easier and cheaper solutions to get rid of the tram traffic jams in the mall - like detouring the trams, except maybe one or two lines, along an already existent track further South, but they want the mega project. Poor Karlsruhe.

Market in Durlach by Kathrin_E Visitors who like to prepare their own food instead of eating out all the time or at least like to have some fresh fruit now and then will like the farmers' markets. Here are the best locations and their opening hours: Stephansplatz (behind Europaplatz/Postgalerie): Mon, Wed, Fri 7.30-14.00 Gutenbergplatz (Weststadt): Tues, Thurs, Sat 7.30-14.00 Gottesauer Platz (Oststadt): Mon, Wed, Fri 7.30-14.00 Durlach, Marktplatz: Mon - Sat 7.30-14.00 Hint: they claim a closing time of 2 p.m., but hardly any merchant stays that long. Come before noon. My personal favourite is Gutenbergplatz in the Weststadt. The pretty 19th century square (photo yet to be added) becomes the lively meeting point of the whole quarter when the market is open. You'll also find some nice cafes and pubs around the square. Small markets are open in Marktplatz and Kronenplatz every day but there are just a few stalls.
Fruit and veggies, of yourse - watch out for those stalls that don't offer the whole supermarket-like assortment of exotics, these are the local farmers who sell their own products. Besides, the markets sell bread, meat/sausage, olives and stuff, flowers...
The markets are not actually cheaper than the supermarkets and grocery stres. On the other hand, you'll get regional, seasonal products of freshest quality from the local farmers. Gottesauer Platz: Trams 1, 2, S5 to "Gottesauer Platz" Durlach: Trams 1 and 2 to "Schlossplatz"

Like most German cities Karlsruhe has got its shopping mall built by the Otto chain. The new shopping mall, opened in 2006, unites all kinds of stores under one roof - I could tick almost all entrys in the list provided here. Indoor parking is available, no need to walk outside and risk being hit by a drop of rain or two. The Ettlinger Tor Center contains the same chain stores all of these malls contain and sells the same brands that are sold in all of these malls. Local businesses in town have to struggle hard to survive since the thing has been opened. Well, at least the architecture shows some sense of taste, I've seen worse elsewhere.
Everything - if you are content with the same stuff and brands you get everywhere else, too. Theme: OtherAddress: Ettlinger TorDirections: Between Ettlinger Tor and Friedrichsplatz, just round the corner from Marktplatz

Postgalerie by Bernd_L This impressive building is the former main post office of Karlsruhe. It has been transformed into a mall. On 4 storeys you'll find all kind of stuff in numerous shops. In the basement there are also some fast food restaurants. So if you have the urgent need to spend some money in Karlsruhe to boost our economy, then have a look inside and shop til you drop. Kaiserstrasse at marketplace by Bernd_L The Kaiserstrasse is Karlsruhe's main shopping street. Here you find all you need - from big department stores to small boutiques and espellialy a large number of shoe-shops. Between Europaplatz and Berliner Platz this street is a pedestrian area. But be careful with the constantly passing trams. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

I didn’t have time for a lot of shopping in Karlsruhe, but we did check out this large mall, which was only a short walk from our hotel. It has 130 shops with ranging from fashion and accessories, cosmetics, health stores, books and entertainment electronics, cafés and bars etc. We went in the large supermarket on the lower floor, where I bought a tin of Chris’s favourite German food-stuff, sauerkraut.
Prices in the supermarket seemed reasonable – I paid just a couple of Euros for my tin of sauerkraut. I didn’t take any photos here – instead, why not enjoy some more images from the Botanical Gardens! The Karlsruhe Umbrella by Kathrin_E Schöpf is one of the very few locally owned stores in the center of Karlsruhe, an elegant fashion store. I guess this is not the only place in town where the umbrella is available, but that's where I bought mine.
Like any place in Central Europe, Karlsruhe gets its share of rain during all seasons. If you forgot to pack an umbrella, no worries! Here's the solution. This is my Positive Thinking Umbrella. No matter how lousy the weather is, there will be a piece of blue Karlsruhe sky above you. If you're standing undernath a streetlamp at night there will even be sunshine! The pictures show, in clockwise order from the top: ZKM - theater - palace - pyramid and town hall - St Stephan's church - Europahalle - Lutheran church - Gottesaue palace. Umbrellas in this style, with watercolour pictures of the town's most important buildings, are available in many cities and towns all over Germany. Disclaimer: No, I'm not holding shares, neither with the producers nor with the store.
