All beer glasses and steins have marks on them to ensure you get the beer you paid for – not just lots of foam. The mark is low enough so that the foam should not interfere with your purchase and legal rights. Then you go to a busy bar where the bartenders are very busy and not in the best mood. That’s where the trouble begins. They fill way too much of your glass with foam and throw it at you.

Tripack can confirm this criminal activity takes place!

Stop and examine your beer vs foam ratio and where the mark is. If they missed the mark – make them pour you some more! I always asked politely and they usually overfilled – a bonus.

An alternative to beer? You must be mad.

The beer master DAO was quicker than me to describe this beer amateur trap. German beermaster are formidable in business, they even could sell you pure air in a beer ;-)

Pretend you are from UK and explain that you can't stand foam beer in your glass as it is against your traditional & cultural pub background ;-) Sure you will get more beer or water...

1st alternative: Order a beer in bottle and serve yourself with your usual amount of foam...

2nd alternative: Order a Belgium beer of course ;-)

    CHEERS! PROSIT!

The tomb of Margrave Karl Wilhelm (or perhaps that should be "Mar' grave ?) is recognised as the 'symbol' of the city. Built in 1825 for the entombment of Karl it stands right in the middle of the Marketplatz. So why is the tip in this section ?

Well, during our walking tour at the euromeet 2008 , it was mentioned that tour guides often play a little practical joke with tour groups here (such a wicked sense of humour the Germans have, don't they ?). In order to see the tob, they send the men down one set of stairs and the women down another...but only to discover that the tomb is not accessible to the public although it is open as a public convenience. I'm sure my feet would fall off with such rib-tickling tom foolery.

It's a small pyramid. Take a photo. Go and see something more interesting.

I think the only tourist traps in Karlsruhe are the Botanical Garden and the Zoo.

The first is an ordinary garden with some flowers and plants here and there and a greenhouse. The zoo has lots of animals living inside too small cages or areas.

Inside the Botanical Garden there is a restaurant. VTer tini58.de (Christine) recommended it on her Karlsruhe page.

Visit the Palace or do some shopping.

A boat trip should be sth else

  • The MS Karlsruhe is a ship which drives on the Rhine. The only thing I can tell you if you like boat trips, then go for a long boat trip, but around Karlsruhe or even in the harbour there is not much to see, you can use the time better

go for a longer boat trip to Mannheim or Speyer and spend some hours there.

WHERE THEY REALLY MAKE THE BEER !

  • See the big, dark gothic castle where they brew the H Beer? Isn’t this a great photo opportunity for tourists? Wait! What’s this in picture 2? Yes the ugly secret is out! They have to bring the beer here from somewhere else! Did you really think they brew beer in a big castle? Like something out of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?

Get real. To get industrial size quantities of beer you need an industrial facility.

Well here I am exposing yet another Tourist deception.

I did discover the source of the beer for you. Just look at it. There really are mountains of the stuff and had Claus been around he could have climbed on my shoulders and grabbed us some bottles! This place is in an industrial area on the less favourable south side of the city. Doesn’t look too glamorous does it?

This are not the images they want you to see! Just look at the website. Lots of athletic guys doing sports. I didn’t see anyone resembling these guys in the bars that sell Hoepfner. Or the drunks in the park. No, no pictures of homeless guys in their marketing materials. And they drink the product everyday!

Drink it. Let's not get on any moral high horse here.

Go to as many bars as possible and order the same thing. Somebody has to check for quality and consistency of the product. Skip the fairy tale stuff and get some beer!

THEFT AT THE PANAMA CLUB !

  • THEFT FROM VT MEMBERS! Yes. It happened right here in the Panama Club! I kept thinking there was too much fake smoke in this place. Seems it was hiding thieves who were stealing from us! Elena Blue had part of a jacket go missing. Suet had her purse and VT flip flops disappear. Then Claus lost consciousness! Thieving bastards!

Don’t bring anything of value into the club. Just money for drink and Claus.

And miss taking pictures of Claus passed out? No way.

  • Avoid shopping in any of the shops at the railway station. Don't eat there. It is simply not worth the money.

    Karlsruhe's Carnival Parades

    Durlach carnival parade
    by Kathrin_E,

Two big parades take place during carnival: one in Durlach on Sunday (2 p.m.) and one in Karlsruhe Centre on Tuesday (2 p.m.)
The one in Karlsruhe is said to attract 250,000 visitors. I wonder why. It is, sorry to say this, about the most boring parade I have ever seen. Since there are no railings along most of the route and people push to get at the sweets thrown, the passage is narrow and the huge trucks get stuck. The parade takes ages and there are huge gaps between the groups. From Marktplatz to Stephansplatz (usually a 10 minute walk) the parade needs about an hour.
The one in Durlach is shorter and better organized. Presentations are, however, more or less the same as in Karlsruhe. My photos were taken at the Durlach parade.

Photo 1: Karlsruhe's carnival is a lame mix of imported Rheinland style carnival clubs and a few alemannic groups which are hardly noticed. The wagons of the clubs are trucks with poor decoration, only a few of them actually have political themes and figures, most of them neither witty nor funny. This one is at least colourful.

Photo 2: On the trucks you see guys in jester caps and girls in guard uniforms according to Rhineland traditions in the respective club's colours who throw sweets at the spectators.

Photo 3: One of the few theme wagons dealing with local politics. It is about Europabad, the new pool and spa in Karlsruhe which has been opened in 2008 and caused heaps of trouble.

Photo 4: An alemannic witch group marching in the parade.

Photo 5: A private group with some imagination... The ladies dressed as dishwashing detergent bottles. In the 1970's Pril, a well-known German brand, came in such blue bottles with a red tap and two flower stickers on each bottle. In those times almost everyone had these stickers ("Prilblumen") in their kitchen to decorate tiles or cupboard doors.

Check the route the parade takes (newspaper, internet, programme leaflets) and stand in a location as close to the starting point as possible to avoid waiting for ages.

Hop on a train and go to a location where you get to see a real Alemannic Fastnacht parade.
Suggestions can be found on my Baden-Württemberg page!
