Another one of Ladenburg's good restaurants, Die Kartoffel - the potatoe. They serve large potatoes, sour cream, salad, but their main dish are steaks which you prepare yourself on a hot stone. The meat and the stone are brought to the table and you can cook it as you like it, rare, medium or done. This is very nice when you are with friends, want to sit, eat and talk.
The restaurant is in a building from the 16th century and the kitchen is so small, that they had to think of something, and they came up with this idea of the hot stone.
For vegetarians obviously this restaurant is not the best tip, apart from good potatoes and salad there isn't anything to eat. However, one or two of their large potatoes can be very filling. This restaurant is one of my favourites here in the area. It's a German restaurant with traditional dishes. This makes it sometimes a bit hard for a vegetarian, but the owners have come to realize that more and more people stop eating meat , so they've added more vegetarian dishes on their menu. In addtion to their regular menu they have a daily menu, which offers about ten different dishes, all with soup, salad or vegetables, for a very good price.You see many local people stopping there for lunch, very unusual in other cities.
The best time in the year to eat there is during asparagus season, May to 24th of June.The best aspargus dishes are served then, absolutely fresh.
The serve a lot of food, so either come very hungry! or ask to have it wrapped to take home.
Their plate for two could easily feed at least four.
There is an English version of the regular menu, not the daily one. But the waitresses speak some English, one fluently, the other less .
My favourite dish is any asparagus dish during the season. The asparagus is picked in the morning and by 11o'clock it can be ordered in the restaurant. The coffeehouse offers not only coffee and cakes, but limited lunch and dinner entrees, as well. The cake I had was delicious - Florentiner Milchcreme mit sahne. There are several cake selection on the menu. The restaurant is located in an old building (which one might say, most buildings in Europe are old!). It was built in 1683 and the owners left the old world charm intact. In the summer, one can dine in the comfortable vault from the 14th century or in the biergarten in addition to the dining room.
The restaurant is known for its steaks (sirloin, rump, filet mignon) served with three spicy sauces, and baked potato. The potato is American-large and the steak arrives sizzling on a very hot stone. The longer the steak is left on the stone, the more it cooks. The dinner is served with a salad. The steak comes in different sizes and priced accordingly, of course. Small for a small appetite, etc.
Pork, turkey, lamb and shrimps are also on the menu as well as desserts. They also have an extensive bar.
Reservation is highly recommended. Open everyday, both for lunch and dinner, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight respectively!

I got tired after walking the cobblestone lanes for a while and decided I needed a stop, a seat, and a coffee. Actually I had planned to visit one of the cafes in Marktplatz. On the way I noticed this icecream parlour in a new, postmodern building opposite the church of St Gallus. They had tables and cosy-looking armchairs out and the place was notably busy. Many cyclists, probably on a day trip from nearby Mannheim and Heidelberg, stopped there. On the stairs and low stone walls around the church I overheard people with icecream cones talking to each other, "Ah this is good", "You must try this red stuff", etc. The Word of Mouth gave a clear vote where to go...
The name "Forum" refers to Ladenburg's ancient Roman origins and the location. If the Roman basilica, the foundations of which have been excavated, was still standing this cafe would be located in the middle of the forum and a great place to people-watch, just like today. However, those people would be wearing Roman togas and tunics instead of ill-fitting biker shorts ;-)
I ordered a caffelatte and a plain mixed icecream with four scoops - the icecream was really really good and so was the coffee. The place is enjoyable to sit, you face the main facade of the church and the pretty half-timbered houses in the street.
