European Heritage Day
Favorite thing: For several years now, on the second Sunday in September the European Heritage Day is held. In Germany it is called "Day of the open memorial". On this day, many memorials, old towers, crypts in churches etc are open for the public, even though they are usually closed. There are guided tours sometimes, or you are given a leaflet and can walk around on your own. Unfortunately it's all in German, but when you climb up an old watch tower from 1250, you don't need any explanations to realize that
- people back then were smaller than we are now - after you've banged your head for the
second time you're sure to know this
- the inside of an old tower is narrow, dirty and full of cobwebs
- being on duty here must have been pretty boring
- but the soldiers up there had a wonderful view. That was the whole purpose of a watch tower, they had to be able to watch out for enemies.

A stork or a pelican?
Favorite thing: Now you probably say these two large birds cannot really be confused with each other. And what you can see on the picture is a pelican among some storks. You know he is a pelican, and I know he (or she ) is a pelican, but the pelican doesn't know this. He thinks he's a stork.
It seems he has lost his pelican friends somewhere and decided to stay with the storks. He flew south with them last winter , came back with them in spring and decided to brave it out with his new friends this winter(2011/12).
There have been attempts to make him stay with some other pelicans, but he always flies back to his stork friends.
Well, true friendship doesn't ask where you're from, does it?
He can found among the storks in Luisenpark. The birds are free to walk around or fly around, so you may have to look for them.

Favorite thing: The old part of Mannheim is built in an absolutely geometrical way - which is quite unusual for German cities. The streets have no names, but only numbers in the horizontal way and letters in the vertical way. Thus there are some real strange addresses in Mannheim: the school on the picture is found in E7!
There is a real interesting article about the Mannheimer Quadrate - sorry, it is in German only!

Favorite thing: Go to Luisen Park. There are 2 sides to Luisen Park--one is free and it's your typical city park with a walking path, open grassy areas, shade trees and a playground, and the other costs a very small fee (I think it was DM 4 for adults and our 2 year old was free). In the pay area one can visit the aviary or take a boat ride through the park past flamingoes and giant, man-eating fish. There are restaurants, play grounds, a rose garden, and many places to relax in a chaise lounge (provided by the park) and enjoy the scenery. My favorite place within Luisen Park is a grassy area almost hidden by the trees and shrubbery. There are lounges to lie on and classical/soft instrumental music is piped in through speakers hidden in the trees.

Favorite thing: Mannheim is an industrial town. But when you visit the Luisenpark, you think you're in nature. You meet lots of animals, you can visit the plant exhibiton hall or just find a quiete place on one of the lawns.
Modern city lens
Favorite thing: Mannheim is a modern city with a commercial landscape of all the amenties lying around the shopping arcades. Flanked by two rivers on its side, Rhine and Neckar the city is well structured.
Watertrum is its chief visit spot with a large fountain park at its back whose pic you see with this travelogue. You can reach Waterstrum just walking staright from the main station (Hbf) and if you like a more serene atmosphere head right from station to cross the rail bridge to reach a park side along the Rhine river.
Fondest memory: From here onwards you can go to nearby places like Hiedelberg and Cologne with a little more effort.
