The church and some city offices share a spire, overlooking the market square. On market days, Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday mornings, the church is hard to see, as the square is full of vendors, shoppers and people just looking. It's a beautiful church, especially the spire. There are chimes in the spire and and when you enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine in the outdoor area of the Café Journal, you can listen to the music.

If you've read your Dan Brown, you've read about the eye in the triangle and its many theories. In the church attached to the castle the eye is above the altar and in the Jesuit church it's in the center of the dome. This is the very highest point in the Jesuit church, thus symbolizing that God is high above us , seeing everything. The triangle symbolizes trinity.
Leaving all theories about possible conspiracies apart, it never ceizes to amaze me how the builders back in the 18th century were able to build churches as tall as this one and put the eye up there.
However, what you see today is an exact reconstruction, as the church was destroyed in WW II.

Although Mannheim is an industrial city which has been destroyed to a great extent during WW II, you can still find wonderful architecture in the city itself. To understand a little about the history and consequently the destructions and rebuildings of many of the Mannheim buildings, do have a look here.

The Wasserturn is the landmark of Mannheim. It was constructed at the end of the 19th century and was heavily destroyed during World War II. After the war it was rebuilt and has been a listed building since 1987.
Are you curious what the Wasserturm looks like this very moment?
Here it is: Watertower webcam

Even though Mannheim has always been overshadowed by Heidelberg, it does have a few places worth sight seeing. One of them is the Jesuit Church. Built in the first half of the 18th century, it is a beautiful baroque church. It is said that catholic Prince-Elector Charles Philipp had come to Heidelberg, tried to convince the citizens there to become catholic, they refused and he decided to build two beautiful catholic churches to show them how much more splendour a catholic church had than a lutheran one.If this is true or not, this church is worth a visit.

The University of Mannheim has a reputation of being particularly strong in Business Administration, Economics and Social Sciences. It has about 10.000 students, over 15 percent of whom come from outside of Germany.
Most university facilities are located in Mannheim Castle, one wing of which is shown in the photo. I chose this particular wing to take a picture of because it is just about the only one that is not covered with scaffolding this year. A lot of renovation work is going on at the moment, especially on the front side of the castle.

The Wasserturm from Mannheim is THE Sight in the city and is located in the middle of a lovely park. Especially in summer it is a very nice place to chill.
The Water Tower is about 60 metres high and is still used as a water tower, yet only in a case of an emergency.

In most of downtown Mannheim, 143 square blocks of it to be exact, there are no street names but rather block numbers.
When you stand with your back to the castle (which is not a bad idea anyway because the castle is being renovated and is covered with scaffolding at the moment) the first block on your left is A1 and the first block on your right is L1.
Going off to your left are the blocks A2, A3, A4 (where the Jesuit Church is) and A5. Going off to your right are L2, L3 (where the tax office is), L4, l5 etc.
If you walk straight ahead away from the castle, which is roughly north-northeast, you pass blocks B1, C1, D1 etc. up to K1 on the left, and M1, N1, O1 (which is Paradeplatz), P1 etc. up to U1 on the right.
The house numbers go around each block starting at the corner which is closest to the castle. In the A-K blocks the numbers go around each block in a counter-clockwise direction, and in the L-U blocks they go around clockwise.
The address of a building in this area usually consists of the block number, a comma and the house number. The Adult Education Center for instance is at R3, 13.
Any questions?
