Animals and Birds in Quiet Places

    The Heron

Favorite thing: I love visiting quiet places where I can get lost in nature and see some local wildlife. Schwetzingen is a perfect place to see both. There are no crowds to disturb the birds or animals. The heron was very still, he probably thought the greenery had camoufaged him. The little otters did draw a crowd and were delightful, the swan ignored everyone as swans do, but the one who stole the show was the tiny red squirrel. Yes little town, your wildlife is perfect.

Fondest memory: We have very few red squirrels in Scotland and it was a lovely surprise to meet one here in the gardens = my husband was so proud and delighted to capture one on camera - so not only a memory but a visual one we can both look back on.

    Schwetzingen - A Real Gem

Favorite thing: Schwetzingen is a tiny old town nearby Heidlberg and Mannheim. Most people miss coming here in favour of bigger places with more attractions. I enjoyed every thing Schwetzingen had to offer. The town is a quiet, quaint, unhurried little gem. I particularly enjoyed wandering around some very quiet streets. The details on the houses captivated me with their colourful floral boxes, the little chickens on the slate porch roof, the flower design on the brick work and best of all, the use of trained trees to enhance more modern buildings.

Fondest memory: I have many many memories of Schwetzingen = if I had a favourite memory it would be something I cannot picture - the sound of the Church Bell when it broke the silence in this sleepy place.

Favorite thing: When talking about Schwetzingen, most people only think of the palace. Okay, I guess the palace IS the most fantastic sight of Schwetzingen, but the town itself is quite nice as well!

There are beautiful old houses, lovely restaurants and some nice shopping opportunities, but on a small scale only, since Schwetzingen is rather small. Still it is a great place to spend some time as well!

Favorite thing: On the premises of the Schwetzingen palace gardens you will also be able to see quite a bit of wildlife.

When spotting the first heron we thought it was one of those great statues, but no, it moved!!! We did see quite a few herons here and there - there sure is enough water around for them to feel at home.

Other than that there were ducks, swans, a peacock and an enourmous number of carps!

Favorite thing: The statues in the palace gardens of Schwetzingen are a fantastic example of the various architectural epoques of this place:

you will find lots of statues (and of course other architecture) from the Baroque area - these are mainly the ones with themes from the antique mythology.

The reasonable, rationalistic view of the Enlightenment is reflected in the geometrical views of the gardens, but also in some of the statues.

The Romantic period stresses the concept of nature with its imitation of natural moods, landscaped areas and statues of birds, deer etc.

    Quite fascinating, isn't it?

Favorite thing: In the baroque park, they have lots of different delightments, such as a temple, a roman aqueduct, a bath house, some exotic plants, several illusions, a mosque with a turkish garden, a castle, etc. It was a kind of Disney land for the people of the baroque age.
