Calwer-Eck-Brau does their own beers and huge platters of food in an upstairs tavern on Calwer Strasse, the nearest thing we found in Stuttgart to a nightlife 'district' besides the Old Town. It seems to be very popular after work as most of the tables were reserved when we arrived.
It's quite spiffy with lots of stained glass and traditional fittings, but it's all faux fixtures and the air gets thick with cigarrette fumes. Yet the beer is good and the food looked tasty too.

When you want to drink a typical local beer in Stuttgart, you have to visit the Calwer-Eck-Bräuerei. A beer-brewery where they make their own beer. You can get a tour around the brewery downstairs and drink it all up upstairs. Order a pitcher of a liter and enjoy!

As mentioned in my travel tips, get yourself a Stuttcard ASAP because you can help yourself to free coffee, cake and beer at many places around town.
Paulaner is a lovely old tavern near the top end of historic Calwerstrasse with its many cafes and restaurants. It opens out onto a fountain and plaza shaded by trees.
Inside just hand over your Stuttcard voucher to receive a free 300ml glass of their beer! You'll be handed a menu as well, the prices on which might make you choke on your nice cold lager, but they make no noises if you smile and say 'maybe later!'.
