Sober Stuttgart didn't seem to have much nightlife (we never did find the Bean Quarter which is supposed to be lively). You'll rarely see more than three taverns or restaurants in a row, making it rather difficult to have a good night out without trailing all over town.
We timed our trip to coincide with the Oktoberfest-style Volksfest in late September where there are five massive beer tents that can hold 5,000 people in each. These are always packed, though there are plenty of other smaller marquees, but the focus of the festival is not on beer.
Surprisingly, there was a lively family atmosphere to the festival with people of all ages enjoying the rides, sideshow, flea market and food village late into the night. It's free to get in and there are special direct trains from the city centre. Apparently the first few days of the 3-week festival includes a country fair with farm animals and tractors!

Oktoberfest and Fruehlingsfest ('Spring festival') are a really good way to familiarize yourself with German beer!!! If you haven't been dancing on benches and tables before, this would be your chance to change this....
The beer tents are absolutely huge. There is always a band playing traditional German music, which sounds a BIT odd to start off with, but after a while you will realise that the fest wouldn't be quite the same without it. Amazingly despite the fact that most people are totally wasted, there is always a friendly atmosphere (no fighting etc. nastiness). Highly recommended!!!
Dress Code: This is not a place to wear anything fancy. As a general rule, don't take anything with you that you will miss if you loose it or it gets damaged (both of these can happen).
