Stuttgart is a city of wine the vineyards almost reach the central station, and every year in August the annual Weindorf is takes place for about ten days. The whole Marktplatz and Schillerplatz are full of little booths where the local restaurants and winebars sell wine and food. The younger people meet at the Schillerplatz and there especially in the area in front of the Altes Schloß (old castle) In 2003 the Weindorf last from August 27th to Sept 7th.
Not only Munich has its Oktoberfest also Stuttgart does and behind Munich it is the second largest volksfest worldwide. The tents are a tic smaller and there are more local people but in the end it's about the same. The Wasen always takes place at the end of September this year from Sep 27 to Oct.12 2003. Stuttgart also has a big Volksfest in Spring the Cannstatter Frühlingsfest this year from April 20th to Mai 12th.On Saturday the 19th we had a small but fantastic VT meeting in the Fürstenberg tent.

At the end of September the City of Stuttgart throws a huge Oktoberfest. Ten beer tents holding 1,000's of your new closest friends. There is a large carnival surrounding the tents complete with food stalls and all the rides you need to heave ho all that beer you drink. The festival goes on from near the last week in September through the first week in October.
The Krautfest is every year at the weekend of the 3rd sundy of October (17./18. Oct 2009).

I can't believe I didn't have this tip in here since I've gone every year. Last year they had a lovely area that was Petite France. It got taken over this year and was replaced by a Bavarian looking type area. I like this one better. Lots of wood laden buildings and a great German feel. There 's quite alot of places to sit and lots of food to choose from. Since seating is hard to find at times at the fest it's a nice cozy place to get away from the carnival rides and the big beer tents. It is right in the center of the fest. The beer tents are great too and get quite crazy crazy at night. Lots of Germans wear traditional costumes and all the servers do. The big beer tents also have nice full menus with dishes such as cheese spaetzle (German pasta dumplings) with salad, roast chicken, Shweinhaxe (spit roasted pork nuckle, huge, my husband fave), schnitzel and more. It's a large festival and is in the Bad Caanstat area of Stuttgart. I'm going to include photos from the last 2 years.
This is one of the most unique Christmas Festivals I have been to. There are people dressed up in very traditional medieval clothes and they sell swords and goblets and things that you would think were from that era. There were old games being played like betting on which hole a real mouse would run to and other games for children. Really cool stuff. And the food booths and stalls were unique too. A must see.

Before I came to Germany to live, Octoberfest in Munich was the only beer festival I knew of here. But I've been told that Stuttgart has one that is as good and popular as the Munich one. In here, it is Wasen. What I also learned is that it's not a beer festival but a celebration of harvest just with a lot of beer thrown in! Everything is decorated in the theme of harvest with various vegetables, autumn colors and, naturally, livestock that is carried over from ancient times as a celebration of life.
You have pleanty of things to do here, but I suggest that you come in day time if you are with children because it gets very crazy and rowdy. Predominantly in a good way but non the less lot's of drunk people falling down. If you are not with kids, NIGHT TIME for sure!!!!!!!
In the picture you can see one of many tents where you can listen to traditional German music, have traditional southern German food (Schwabische and Bayernische with some austrian thrown in) and of course, drink traditional BIER (it's beer for you only english speaking ppl :)
Even if you are not a beer lover it is not an excuse not to go to a beer tent. The food and atmosphere are reason enough alone to have fun. But enough of the boring stuff!
And for you beer lovers, well German beer is known around the world to be the best and justifyably! I would recommend to have "wiessen" beer. Many people who don't even like beer, once they've tried weissen found it pleasant to the palette. Weissen is a wheat beer. It's cloudy and the taste borders on the sweet side... in a word: GREAT!!! Why do you think I could drink a whole litre, and then some!
While speaking of that, be aware that it is rather difficult to find smaller stiens during the weekend. After all, the principle must be held! It is the weekend! :) Small ones are available only during weekdays (we don't want people going around drunk! :)
