    Marktplatz, Stuttgart

The Market Square (Marktplatz) dates back to around 1714, although it has been developed additionally since the war. The Marktplatz is a wide open space, and a good central point for navigating the south part of town. It is dominated by the towering Rathaus, and so is easy to locate from most parts of the town.

    City Council building

I remember visiting Market Square and the Rathaus - the City Council building -
especially on Christmas when the square turns into a big market are veri beautiful sites.
All stands were handmade and carefully decorated by people from all over Baden-Wuerttemberg.

    Rathaus, Stuttgart

This particular town hall is its third incarnation on this spot. The rear sections of the new building were built according to the designs of the original architects Professors von Jassoy and J. Vollmer between 1901 and 1905, while the main front section was remodelled by the architects Schmohl and Storer between 1953 and 1956. The building dominates the Marktplatz, and its distinctive tower is a great landmark seen from all over the town.

Both times I have been to Stuttgart, it was at Christmas so I have been able to experience the fun and frenzy of the Weinachtsmarkt quite a few times. I love it!

Jam-packed with people and stalls selling everything from lebk?chen and gl?wein to tights to switchblade knives, the Christmas market is a treat for peoplewatchers, even if you don't want to buy anything.

The Stuttgart Town Hall (Rathaus) is the third in the history of the City. This last version was built between 1953 and 1956. The glockenspiel (chimes), which are located some 60.5 m above the ground, play local schwäbish folk music several times a day.
