By looking at the outside of this pilgrimage monastery church you just cannot imagine what delights await you inside. I was totally blown away by this place! Pink marble - it might sound like a horror, but it's not, it's awesome. You just have to see it for yourself. They don't allow photos inside or I'd post one here to encourage you to go! It's on Lake Constance, out in the countryside, which made its impressive interior all the more unexpected.

I think the closest town might be Unteruhldingen. It's also not far from Meersburg. It was built in the 1700's by Peter Thumb. I could have sat in there all day, but we were off to see more of Baden-Wurttemberg...

    by JetlagCity
Hohenzollern looks just like a storybook castle, crowning a high hill out in the countryside where you can see it for miles around. You can take a guided tour inside to see the beautifully furnished rooms, family jewels (quite impressive!), a great mural of the Hohenzollern family tree, and stained glass crests in the windows.

Officially tours are only offered in German in the off-season, but the two guides were kind enough to add a few comments in English for us here and there.

    Konstanz Harbor
    by JetlagCity
These trees were abundant in Konstanz, and elsewhere around Baden-Wurttemberg. Konstanz, as you might guess, is on Lake Konstanz (aka Lake Constance). I really enjoyed walking around the streets here, with all their paintings and murals on the buildings. Don't miss the Muenster cathedral, or the giant statue of the prostitute at the harbor (in the background of this picture). She's holding the diminutive religious and state leaders in the palms of her hands - no doubt a political statement! Peter Lenk is the artist.

For more pictures and information, please see my Konstanz VT page.

This castle sits right on the very edge of a dramatic cliff. It's right above the little town of Honau, and it costs about 5 Euros for a tour of part of the inside. My favorite room was full of shelves of Bohemian and Venetian drinking glasses. It's the outside that's most impressive, though, with its precarious setting!

This centuries old monastery turned castle turned hunting lodge was quite a treat. What stood out the most here was room after room full of very beautiful woodwork. Plus it has stained glass and beautiful antique furniture. Upstairs in the old monastery section you can see the tiny monk's cells that once served as their spartan bedrooms.

Definitely check out Peter Lenk's sculpture gardens, in the little town of Bodman. I think this is simply the land around his home, or around his sculpture studio. I would have been a bit intimidated to wander around and have a look, but there was actually a tour bus full of people there right ahead of us, so I gathered it's alright. His sculptures are very odd, strange creations, sometimes half human, half animal. Most have a political or social message.

The Black Forest is the place to get a cuckoo clock if you want one. Maybe for some people this is a tourist trap, but not for me. Both sides of my family had cuckoo clocks, so I associate them with wonderful things - home, warmth, coziness, my grandparents. There are shops in Triberg and around the Black Forest, with dozens (probably hundreds) of designs and sizes.

Tubingen is a very pleasant university town on the Neckar River. You can walk along the river path or eat at one of the restaurants along the river for nice views. We strolled through the Old Town section and up to the castle, which is now being used for university classes. There are lovely views from up there. I never knew Germany had red roofs like these!

Be sure to stop into the Stiftkirche, too. It has some interesting sculpted sarcophagi behind the alter, and a great stained glass window with little angels in red.

Here's a link to my Tubingen page, if you want to see more.

Meersburg ties with Tubingen for the most charming town I visited on this trip. It's right on Lake Constance and I'm told it's a busy little place in summertime. In fact, more than any other place I visited, I'd like to come back and experience Meersburg in the summer sometime.

It has two castles, a very old and a new one, and two sections of town, upper and lower. Plenty of half-timbered buildings with murals, some vineyards right in town, and lovely views over the water. Truly a delightful place!

A very fine example of a gothic church! All spires and gargoyles, dating back to the 1200's. Its tower was a skyscraper in its day and still looks impressively high today. I especially liked the interesting organ inside, one of several.

The rest of the town is quite nice as well, with its medieval town gates still standing and little man-made waterways flowing through the town.
