Berlin has three airports - Tegel (TXL) 8km from the city centre, Schonefeld (SXF) 22km from the city centre, and Tempelhof (THF) 6km from the city centre. When we visited Berlin in May 2006, we flew into Tegel airport from London Heathrow. We found the airport to be very organised and we were through customs, with our baggage collected in record time. Our first taste of German efficiency! We chose to fly with British Airways to Berlin as they fly from Heathrow, which is the most convenient airport for us. There are several other airlines that fly from the UK to Berlin, including Air Berlin, Easyjet and Ryanair. Ryanair often has some very cheap fares on offer from London Stanstead. Leave a Comment

Above the clouds by diocletianvs We went to Berlin by Germanwings from Zagreb - bought our tickets few months in advance and paid something like 50 Eur for the return trip. Again, Germanwings showed as the great airline - cheap prices and great service. They use Berlin Schönefeld airport which is located quite far from the city centre and was once the main airport for East Berlin. There is only one terminal and it's rather small and still has old charm when airports were more about efficient boarding and not about efficient shopping. The S-bahn station is located approx. 200 metres from the terminal building and if you don't like walking under the covered walkway there is a shuttle bus. S-bahn #9 takes you to the center in little more than half an hour, and there is also an Airport Express that's even faster and costs the same - only 2,20 Eur (Aug 2005) which is a regular price for Berlin public transport. There are very ambitious plans for the new terminals south of the existing airport when this will become BBI - Berlin Brandenburg International Airport - and will serve as Berlin's main airport from 2011 onwards when Tegel will close. Berlin has two main airports, Tegel and Schonefeld. Tegel is the busiest one, and serves most of the major airlines and destinations. Schonefeld used to be the airport for the cities in eastern Europe, but now serves a number of budget airlines, including Ryan Air. Tegel airport has plenty of regular bus services to the centre, including #X9 and #109 to the Bahnhof Zoo. Schonefeld is further out, but links to the city center via the S-Bahn and regular train are easily available. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Because of its facked up, crazy history, Berlin isn't quite the transportation hub that other capitals of Europe are. Unlike London or Paris, Berlin is not a hub city. There are a lot of new budget airlines in berlin, but the best deal is easyjet, as they have made Berlin a hub on the European continent. They keep adding new destinations from Berlin Schönefeld for ridiculously low flight prices: Athens, Valencia, Ljubjana, Talliin! Wow! Ryanair has a good budget flight from London and Germania offers flat rate flights to Moscow. It's a budget traveler's dream! Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Berlin Tegel by tessy There are 3 airports in Berlin: Tegel, Tempelhof and Schoenefeld. This is Tegel airport. We went from there to Greece. Try to catch the TXL bus, it goes quickly there. Leave a Comment

The closest airport to the city centre. Arriving here is easy and customs were not as miserable and poe faced as they are in most airports! NB - When you depart from Tegel : You will find your gate next to your flight's check in desk and they want to get you through to the gate as quickly as possible. One through to your gate you will find yourself in a glass enclosed room which is probably only big enough for one flight but may have to hold enough people for 2! Our gate (3) had a rather rubbish duty free shop, 2 toilets per sex and a coca cola vending machine (from which you could buy small bottles of various drinks for a ridiculous sum of money - something like 3,60EUR. As I was out of Euros and relying on purchasing on my card from the shops in the gate I could not get adrink from the vending machine and was horribly thirsty.... and then, of course I was delayed! The gate next to us (we could see one another through the glass) had a bar from which they could get tea, coffee, soft drinks and I think some alcohol.... but no duty free shop! All in all Tegel experience was absolutely pants! Theme: Airplane

Compared to many modern and large airports I thought Tegel was so easy to find my way around. Its really quite small so you cant have much or any difficulty....after thought....in FACT...because it was so small I guess if I had any problems here it was moving through the compacted crowds of people using the airport.

There are three main airports in Berlin: Tegel Airport (6km from the city). If you are coming from Western Europe and North America this is usually where you will land. From here, a taxi will cost in the region of 25 DM though a cheaper option will be the bus (no 109). This leaves every 10 minutes or so and costs around 4DM - a saving of 21DM! Either way it will take about half an hour into the city centre. Tempelho Airport (5km from the centre). It used to be a millitary airfield (and so has a few less facilities). To get to the centre you can catch the U-Bahn It is right next to the airport. Schönefeld Airport (24 km from the centre) is where those from Eastern Europe and Russia will land though you will also find some charter flights that go. You can used either the S-Bahn (this is the train that goes above ground) or the expensive option of the taxi. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

by FletteMette Berlin has three international airports - Schönefeld (which used to be the central airport of the GDR), Tegel and Tempelhof. Schönefeld Airport (SXF) is situated 18 km or so south-east of Berlin city centre, and is mostly used by charter companies and by low-cost carriers such as EasyJet, Ryanair, Germanwings - while Tegel (TXL) is the main Berlin airport. Schönefeld airport is small and compact, and everything from luggage retrieval to check-in went smoothly when we visited. There are four terminals, most airlines use terminal A - and all terminals are connected. We flew from terminal A, which had a couple of cafes (a Marché with decent sandwiches - the only other option we noticed was a Burger King) - a couple of shops, and not much else. There's not much to do at all, and there's also a pretty limited number of seats available after you pass through security. (But a lack of facilities almost seem to be the norm on airports primarily used by low-cost carriers!) Connections to the city centre are very good - for transportation to and from Schönefeld airport, see separate tip. Leave a Comment
