I had studied the lay-out of Berlin-Tegel before arriving and so felt more confident going there than at the Frankfurt International. In reality, I did better at Frankfurt International than at Berlin-Tegel.
What I had realized what that Berlin-Tegel was arranged in a spiraling circle, and that the buses I was looking for to get to my hostel were on the lower level. When you step off the plane, you can walk down the tunnel and out to pick up your baggage and go through security immediately. I attempted to follow other passengers (as this had worked before at Frankfurt) but still go lost. There were not helpful attendants or faces on the top level to help you along. The airport person I stopped to ask for help refused to acknowledge English though I am sure they might have understand "Where is the bus?". My German had totally deserted me at that point I was so tired. I ended up taking a taxi to the hostel.
Next time I know how to get around the airport, but probably should have asked the airline exactly what information I needed before I left, they certainly offered that on the airplane. Wait a minute! I did ask! They told me you'll see them when you get out. I did not either, but I still enjoyed my trip! ;-)

If you booked a flight to Berlin from the US, most likely you will have to catch a connecting flight at Frankfurt International before heading on to Berlin.
I got to Frankfurt after an overnight flight at around 7am in the morning. My luggage had already been transferred over so I didn't have to worry with that, but unlike what they person said at the Lufthansa telephone line, I DID have to go through passport control at Frankfurt instead of waiting until Berlin. That hadn't made sense to me in the first place, but I figured he knew what he was talking about. Well, he didn't. Question anything that doesn't sound right to you and make sure before leaving!
Passport control was rather efficient though one person from Nigeria did get held up a long time, and was still there after I had already gone through. There were many persons to help and direct you through the airport once you landed just like a kind VTer had told me. Also, there were a number of other people just like me wandering around, so I didn't feel out of place at all.

There are three main airports in Berlin:
Tegel Airport (6km from the city). If you are coming from Western Europe and North America this is usually where you will land. From here, a taxi will cost in the region of 25 DM though a cheaper option will be the bus (no 109). This leaves every 10 minutes or so and costs around 4DM - a saving of 21DM! Either way it will take about half an hour into the city centre.
Tempelho Airport (5km from the centre). It used to be a millitary airfield (and so has a few less facilities). To get to the centre you can catch the U-Bahn It is right next to the airport.
Schönefeld Airport (24 km from the centre) is where those from Eastern Europe and Russia will land though you will also find some charter flights that go. You can used either the S-Bahn (this is the train that goes above ground) or the expensive option of the taxi.

Please have in mind that parking spots at Airport Tegel are quite of a problem as the area is absolutely jammed, compared to the very comfortable and relaxed parking situation at Hannover Airport.
