    Memorials - Soviet Soldiers

    Monument for an Imposing Army

Favorite thing: The Monument to Soviet Soldiers is in the Tiergarten, just off the Strasse des 17. Juni, near the Brandenburg Gate. It was unveiled on November 7, 1945, only 6 months after V-E day, and on the 28th anniversary of the beginning of the fall 1917 Russian Revolution.

300,000 Russian troops were killed in the final campaign to seize Berlin in the early months of 1945.

Marble to build the memorial was taken from Hitler's Chancellery.

Oddly enough, the Soviet Soldiers' Memorial ended up in West Berlin, though Soviet soldiers were guaranteed free access to it.

    The old Congres Hall

    by Audrey118 Written Mar 2, 2003 1381 reviews
    Pregnant Oyster!!!

Favorite thing: pposite the Reichstag is the old Congress Hall, former called "Benjamin-Franklin-Halle", was the American contribution to the International Building Exhibition in 1957. It was declared as a gift of America to its close affiliate of West Berlin.

Some people said that from the side view, the Congress Hall looks like a memorial of the 'Big Mouth of a Berliner' and some called it Jimmy Carter's Smile ... others called it The Pregnant Oyster.

Next to it is a bell tower with one of the largest chimes in the world. It was a present from Benz for the 750th anniversary celebrations of Big Benz. The Congress Hll overlooks a the famous river Spree.

Flamingoes on one leg...tryng to warm up the other

Favorite thing: Surely in Berlin you must not miss the zoo. Giving its name to the famous Zoo Station, it somewhat still embodies early 19th century taste for esotic species and places. Beside animals, you will in fact find fake oriental palaces acting as the animals' homes during the long winter months. A little decadent, but animals very well cared for. The panda is so sad, though.

    Berlin Tiergarten

    From the Siegessule: Tiergarten,and then

Favorite thing: This part of the city belonged to West Berlin and ends with the Brandenburg Gate. It is dominated by and named after a huge park called "Tiergaten" ("animal park" - there are no animals though - ok, squirrels maybe), which is the largest one of the city.

Fondest memory: Sights in this area:
    - Governmental are (Regierungsviertel) with the Reichstag
    - Siegessäule (Column of Victory)
    - Bellevue Castle
    - Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of the world's cultures)
    - Tiergarten park
