The Berlin Marathon takes place towards the end of September every year and this year was on 29/30th. This year the conditions were perfect as it was dry, cool and Berlin is flat as a pancake making for fast times and 1 million people were out on the streets to watch. I had no idea it was taking place until I had a letter from the hotel about possible traffic disruption in the area. On the day I went around the corner from the hotel and obtained the various times from one of the officials and a good vantage point. There were a number of participants in wheelchairs that went past first. Gradually the crowd grew and a drumming band turned up. As the participants went past there was cheering, whistles and rattles as well as clapping and cheering. The first runner Haile Gebrselassie went past and I had no idea at the time that history was being made. I stood there at somewhere around the 38k marker and waited a good 5 minutes before the next runner appeared. It was only later that I discovered that the world record for the marathon had been broken by Haile Gebrselassie setting a time of 2:04:26 and cutting the previous record by phenomenal 29 seconds. I slowly walked around to one of the drinks station and by now the bulk of the 40,000 runners were now going past in a continue flow. It was also another good spot with another drumming band encouraging the runners on. So if you like audience participation this is a good event to watch. Big sports events need sponsorship to be able to attract world-class athletes. The Berlin Marathon is therefore now officially known as the Alberto Berlin Marathon. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Sport-Club Charlottenburg e. Waldschulallee 34

Every September the Berlin Marathon takes place. With 40,000 participants it's one of the biggest in the world and I think it's one of the nicest, too. A historic setting. A great atmoshere! All people from Berlin seem to stand at the streets cheering. There are bands playing. And when I watched a few kms before the finish line even the runners were cheering ;-) No surprise, we stood at the last corner before they would run towards Brandenburg Gate. Only a few metres behind the gate the finish line! Mase sure to not drive in Berlin on Marathon day and the Saturday before (when the Inline Marathon takes place). All major roads are closed and it takes ages to get from A to B.
As spectator bring a whistle. As runner bring stamina. Leave a Comment Theme: Extreme SportsDirections: All around the centre of Berlin (Start and Finish are at Straße des 17. Juni)

... and not only the runners, also the skaters and wheel-chair racers! The Berlin marathon takes place every year in late September. Either you can join the run through the city or you can be among the crowd along the streets and cheer, clap hands and enliven the runners. Great fun! I live on a street that is part of the course, so it's always a pleasure to watch the marathon runners from the window. By the way, the "little brother" of the marathon, the half-marathon, takes place every April. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: The marathon starts at Str. des 17. Once a year in September, thousands of professional and amateur runners compete in the the Berlin Marathon. It is the biggest and most popular marathon race in Germany, even comparable to the New York marathon. The course is like a sightseeing tour through Berlin and leads past many sights, like the Brandenburg Gate and the "Siegessäule". The Berliners take this event very seriously, and many spectators convene along the race. If you only want to go for the half distance, the Berlin half marathon is equally spectacular and takes place in April.
