 | Berlin Things To Do | Tips 1251 - 1260 of 3135 | | This is one of the most famous streets in Berlin, leading to Brandenburger Tor [or the Door, as Holli & I called it... ;)], the big gate symbolizing unification of the two Germanies. I'd suggest taking the S-bahn to Unter den Linden stop & just walking around there for a bit, checking out the small streets & the University, getting to another sight [the Reichstag is just a minute away from the Tor] or simply sitting for a coffee (or a beer, hehe) & a sausage... The best way to check out the TV tower (Fernsehturm in German) is on your way to or from Alexanderplatz. It's really not so far by foot, so take a break from the metro & the crowd. :) The tower itself was built in 1969 & has been visited by almost 50 million tourists since! You have a perfect overview of the whole city from the 368 m high tower! You can even get married up there, well if you're up to it... ;) Another highlight is the rotating restaurant - watch out for the prices though! :) The entry fee is 7 EUR. Along Unter den Linden there are several buildings that belong to the University! Maybe the most famous one is Humboldt Universität, where I even managed to attend an International Students Welcome Party. ;) Most of the time [especially during the weekend] there's a Flohmarkt, where you can find all kinds of books, dictionaries, comics aso. Hollie & me found some interesting covers like 'The Woman of Today', 'The Three Degrees of Erotic', 'Happy Pocketbook' aso [see photos]. ;) Leave a Comment Address: Unter den Linden, Berlin-MitteDirections: S-Bahn: Unter den Linden, Bus 100

The former church was heavily damaged during the WWII which was the main reason for the Germans deciding not to rebuild it - not completely at least! They just added the tower which was built in a more than a modern way. So, why they got is the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church - or Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche in German. I'm not gonna comment it too much - some like it, some don't. I think it's a good representation of unifying two differentialities - like East & West. Nevertheless... I preferred hanging out in a bar with my friend. :) Do yourself a favor & enter the small streets around the place! Alexanderplatz is a really famous square in Berlin, a place of a big importance & a meeting point. It's very easily accesible by any kind of transportation & there's also lots of big shopping malls, cafés, book stores etc. Be sure never to be late & let die Weltzeituhr [the World Clock] remind you of the time! I used to meet everyone under that clock, because it's very easy to find. But people also meet by the neptune fountain, which is a bit to the inside of the square. As in the whole Berlin, there's something being built or re-built all the time, so you'll see a lot of that on Alexanderplatz. Even with all those high buildings & shopping malls, the square tends to grow... Leave a Comment Address: Alexanderplatz, Berlin-MitteDirections: U-Bahn: Alexanderplatz

When one starts thinking about the concept of a wall in general & what it does to people, how it boarders them & closes everything, one also starts thinking about life iteslf, about bigger & more important things. Just try to imagine what it must have been like back then, even though it was years ago. Berliners have a special connection to the Wall which I understand. I suppose there just has to be something left to remind them of what life was like before. There are still parts of the Wall on the way from Brandenburger Tor to Potsdamer Platz & around Potsdamer Platz itself. Take a closer look & try to put yourself in their shoes... Leave a Comment

Ku'Damm [short for Kurfürstendamm] is a part of Berlin filled with numerous cafés, shops, shopping malls aso. All in all, a great neighborhood with a lot of things to attract different kinds of people. I've just switched from one bar to another with my friend, just enjoying my time, checking out different kinds of beers & laughing till my lungs hurt. :) A really nice memory... The Berlin Cathedral is best seen at night. This church was erected bewteen 1894 and 1905 on the site where there had previously been a Dominican, Lutheran, and then a Calvinist church that existed since the mid-sixteenth century. A previous cathedral was built in the mid-eighteenth century, but later destroyed. Again, don't go out of your way to see this magnificient structure in daylight. The guide book told us that if we only had time for one museum whilst in Berlin, this was it. They weren't wrong! I am so glad we took time to see the ground floor of this great museum which is the "British Museum of Germany" in my definition. "Stolen" from their original countries by German archaeologists, treasures include the Pergamon Altar which gives the museum its name. This is a fantastic part of an altar found in the old Greek city of that name in today's Turkey. Just as you think that is overwhelming, you enter the next room, where the market gate of Miletus leaves you gobsmacked and that's despite being covered behind a net due to a several years long restoration of the war damaged and generally crumbling treasure. Then you enter yet another room and awe strikes again as you face the reconstructed wall and Ishtar Gate from Babylon in Nebudchanezzar II's time! If you weren't indoors, it would feel like somewhere out of a desert town film scene classic, only much more real, with the walls full of religious creatures mixed from strong animals. These were some of the more famous things we looked at but the museum also houses Islamic art and various temporary exhibitions such as one on Herculaneum that we also saw. This should maybe be under "Berlin for children" but I saw plenty of adults interested in the animals so here goes. Berlin Zoo is one of the nicest city centre zoos I have seen, with reasonable space for all animals apart from the big cats. Those are probably happier in summertime when they get out more...Come here to see great orangutans, a panda (amongst several) donated to Helmut Kohl by China, lovely bats and wallabies...You can buy tickets for just the zoo or including the adjacent aquarium where I found the jellyfish fascinating!
