Russian "graffiti" from WWII by sabsi This sent me a shiver down my spine. When walking around the Reichstag roof I found this Russian "graffiti" (unlike all other people who were there and just went buy without noticing!) on the outside wall. I think I found history here because I can think of only one occassion when this could have been done: the last days of WWII. There's the famous picture of Russians flying the red flag over the German Reichstag in May 1945. It must have been around that time when this "graffiti" was made because there weren't many Russians on the roof of Reichstag since then I guess. VTer "Leipzig" told me that the signs are the names of two places: Astrachan and Makarov. I am still trying to find out the stories behind them.... View of Berlin from Reichstag dome by der_geograf The Reichstag roof and dome make an excellent evening excursion. You can ascend to the top of the dome and get a pretty good view of the city, walk around the roof, and peer through the windows below and see where the Bundestag (German parliament) toils away shaping the laws of the country. The German parliament is yet another historic landmark and a visit here was one of my highlights. My advise is to go there early or late to avoid the looooong queues as they open early and close late. You are scanned as if going through airport security and then you can visit the top floor with its famous glass dome by Sir Norman Foster for free. If you book in advance, you can also get guided tours of the plenary areas. We only visited the dome but that was great! First of all, it is a good way to orientate yourself as the city views are marvellous up there. Secondly, the dome itself is a masterpiece with its impressingly twisting gangways up to its top - all day long you can see people walking up or down it. This is also one of those moving Berlin places, since an Englishman has been allowed to design the centrepiece of this most important German monument. There are also old pictures of the divided city on exhibit in the dome which doesn't make it less moving. Leave a Comment Phone: 22 73 21 52Directions: Bus 100

Reichstag is a symbol of the victory of the Soviet Union in World War II for Russians. It wasn't restored for a long time, and now, at last, the repair of a building is finished, but the square of Republic in front of it - was in reconstruction during long years, as well as vicinities adjoining it. Once it was the most populous square in pre-war Berlin. After falling and destruction of the Berlin Wall the huge waste ground was formed here. Now Germans realize powerful reconstruction which is coming to an end. Phone: 22 73 21 52Directions: Bus 100

Reichstag Cupola by GillianMcLaughlin 19th April 1999 heralded the first meeting of the Bundestag in it's new Berlin home... 66 years after the Reichstag was burned to the ground. From the river you get one of the best views of the Norman Foster cupola that has attracted international attention. The cupola offers a wonderful panorama across the city and houses as somewhat low-tech and home-made photographic exhibition of the history of the building - although downbeat in presentation it is well worth a look. Otherwise the sheer elegance of the ascent along wide ramps and the kaleidoscopic reflections on the central mirrors are really the must see. The roof garden restaurant next to the dome looks out over Pariser Platz, and is open daily from 09.00 hrs to 24.00 hrs. Tables can be reserved by telephone on +49 (0)30 -22 62 99 33 or online at kaeferreservierung.berlin@feinkost-kaefer.de. Leave a Comment

The queue seen from the top by Bigs Well, ok it?s a little bit of work to get inside. You shoul be there early to avoid a long queue. My friend and I were there on a rainy day in mid summer around 12 noon and we had to wait for an hour, which I think is ok for the views you get and it?s for free! You even get a nice view over the crowds which are still waiting outside :) Leave a Comment Phone: 22 73 21 52Directions: Bus 100

Reichstag by maryamy Designed by a famous British architect Sir Norman Foster, it stands proudly, with a long queue of tourists who want to see inside of it. I was told it's best to go there after 7 p.m. Although even then the queue was very long.... You can still see marks of where the bullets wounded the German hotspot in the big war and you can just imagine the Soviet soldiers climbing it... The first time I was in Berlin this was wrapped up like a Christo photo. 3 years later it's probably the nicest capitol building I've ever seen. It's free to go to the top, but a long wait. Try to go at night for a wonderful view of Berlin. When we were there in 01 the sky was lit with cranes. There is a great view of the new potsdamer platz and the Tiergarten. A view toward Brandenburg Tor from the dome. by trvlrtom A visit here is something everyone knows about when they visit Berlin. Unless your guidebook is ancient, it is always listed as a "must see" site. Perhaps I was too skeptical when I skipped going up to the top during my visit to the city in 2007, so this time, with a group of friends, I went up. This was really worth it. As a few hundred other VT posters have already written the details, I'll just say that what really impressed me was how drawn I was not only to the views outside (assisted by the headphone set that went at MY pace), but by the views into the center. The reflecting lights, angles, curves - all change at every step and bring a new impression of the site. We spent much more time here than I would have thought, going up late in the afternoon and staying until the sun had set and the city was illuminated by lights. It was worth every minute. Just a note to those with small children - don't let the prospect of long lines keep you from the visit. There is a side entrance that employees will take you to so you don't have to wait much at all. Phone: 22 73 21 52Directions: Bus 100
