Tiergarten and Zoo: Tiergarten
Like so many of the grand parks in European cities, the Tiergarten was laid out (by Elector Friedrich III) as hunting ground, but which was destroyed in 1945 in the Battle of Berlin. Today, it is a vast expanse of woodland and lakes in the centre of the city and which is cut through by a series of major thoroughfares and the Landwehrkanal, an inland waterway off the River Spree.

Tiergarten and Zoo: Berlin Zoo and Aquarium
Possibly one of the world's most famous and oldest zoos, the Zoologischer Garten is beautifully landscaped and well-kept (considering the many thousands of daily visitors). There is a huge variety of animals to see, the most famous current resident being Knut the Polar Bear (he's not cute any more by the way :P).

If you visit the zoo you will need an entire day, especially if also visiting the world-renowned aquarium also (separate ticket, we didn't). The zoo itself is huge, and it would not be fun to rush around.

The Tiergarten is a huge park that covers 2 miles in between Bahnhof and the Brandenburg Gate. This 150 hectare area was once the royal hunting grounds.

The Victory Column was built to conmemorate the Prusian defeat of France in 1870. It was originally installed at the Reichstag and moved to the Tiergarten by Hitler in 1938.

For 2.20 euros you can climb its 285 steps.

The Tiergarten is a lovely place to visit in Berlin, any time of the year, especially if you wish to walk through the many paths you will find through the park, or sit on one of the benches and relax under the trees. In summer this is known as a lovely place for barbeques and picnics

I was there in winter, and even then it was lovely, the trees were coated in snow and everything looked magical. I spent a few hours there walking through the park and watching people ice-skating on the frozen lakes.

The Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Schloss Bellevue, Zoologic Garden, Siegess?ule and many other interesting landmarks are all located in or within walking distance to the Tiergarten. Restoration of the Park began in 1949 to repair the damage cause by deforestation during the Second World War. The Tiergarten was originally a hunting grounds for Prussian princes, but was transformed into a park in the 18th century. This gives reason to the name Tiergarten, meaning animal garden.

It is certainly a lovely place to vist!

    Tiergarten and Zoo: Zoo
The Zoo in Berlin is the best museum I have ever been to hands down. It had every type of animal you can think of and they had adequate room to move around. It had elephants, tigers, sharks, Komoto dragons etc. I was in Berlin during a heat wave and just by chance I went to the zoo. It turned out to be on the most fun days in Germany and maybe all of Europe I had a blast!
