Rows of empty shelves... by DrewV Bebelplatz may have been one of the most moving things I've ever seen. The platz is bordered by the Old Library and Humboldt University on two of its sides. From these institutions, the Nazis took twenty thousand books and set them ablaze. In the center of the plaza, a transparent pane of plastic set in the ground allows views into an empty room with row upon row of empty white shelves, enough for each book burned. Nearby, a plaque is set with the words of Heinrich Heine in the 19th century: Nur dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen Where one only burns books, in the end one will also burn humans

UNTER DEN LINDEN by matcrazy1 I was walking along this the most represantitive boulevard of former East Berlin up to the Branderburger Gate when the infamous wall stood in the past. The street and houses along were (and still are) in rebuilding and renovation process since the wall fell down and it happens again as the houses were complitely destroyed (to the earth) at the end of WWII and remained damaged even till 60' of 20th century. What was interesting there? A lot of impressive 18th and 19th century, renovated or newly built buildings. Ok, from the west: - Branderburg Gate, - Jakob-Kaiser House - the largest of the Bundestag?s new parliamentary buildings, - Adlon Hotel building (new), - Embassy of Russian Federation building, - Guggenheim Museum (yes, yes - German and new branch of famous NYC museum), - National Library ( Staatsbibliothek), - Monument of Frederick the Great (on the horse), - buildings of Humboldt University, - Alte Bibliothek (Old Library) and Staatsoper (State Opera), - buildings of Opernpalais and Konprinzenpalais, - Neue Wache (New Guardhouse), - Zeughaus (Arsenal) - amazing baroque building which houses German Historical Museum, - the Schlossbr?cke bridge where Karl-Liebknechtstra?e with Berliner Dome begins. Leave a Comment Directions: S-Bahn: Unter den Linden (S1, S2, S25); U-bahn: Französische Straße (U6); U-bahn + S-bahn: Fredrichstraße (S1, S2, S5, S7, S9, S25, S75, U6). skies like these kept me from mueum interiors by richiecdisc I imagine on a rainy day, the German Historical museum would be a fascinating place to spend some time. It houses a fine collection of maps and old photos of Berlin. But on a nice sunny day like this, it seemed better to enjoy the building from the bridge with a lampost in the foreground. Under den Linden - view form the Brandenburg Gate by TinyTuck "Under the lime trees" is the name of East Berlin's representitive street, which leads from the former Castle (which got blown up during communist times and was replaced by the "Palast der Republik" - the most ugly building I've seen in my life!) to the Brandenburg Gate, passing by the "Forum Fridericianum" (an area with buildings from the time of Friedrich the Great). (The representative street of West Berlin is called "Kurfürstendamm", I wrote about it in one of my shopping tips.) Leave a Comment Directions: Mitte

at Bebelplatz by chancay This avenue has already a more than 450 years old tradition as one of the most beautiful and representive ways in Berlin. A lot of monumental buildings are on both sides of the street that goes from the "Schlossbrücke" to the "Pariser Platz" with the Brandenburg gate. Leave a Comment

by Imbi This is the great street full of history. It was a part of the East Berlin. The best thing is start your walk from Alexander Platz and walk all the way to the Brandenburg Gate. Its around thirty minutes walk but if you are keen about history and monuments, trust me time could stretch up to three hours or more. Named after the lime trees which line its central aisle, Unter den Linden contains many of Berlins best-known landmarks and is the perfect place to start your sightseeing. Architectural highlights include the Zeughaus, the Kronprinzenpalast, the State Opera House, Humboldt University and the Brandenburg Gate. Leave a Comment

Die Neue Wache - Berlin by alexberlin The Neue Wache has been the central memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1993. The building was constructed from 1816 to 1818 to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel for the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm III., as a memorial for those who fell in the Napoleonic wars. From 1818 to 1918, the royal guard was housed in this building. In 1931, Heinrich Tessenow created a "Memorial for Those Who Fell in the Great War" here. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, the building was badly damaged by bombs. From 1960, the restored building was the GDR's "Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism", and an eternal flame burned in the center of the chamber. In 1969, the remains of an unknown soldier and an unknown prisoner from a concentration camp were laid to rest here, surrounded by soil taken from the killing fields of the Second World War and from the concentration camps. Until 1990, the changing of the guard of honor took place in front of the memorial every Wednesday. After reunification, the Neue Wache became the "Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Victims of War and Tyranny": the vague formulation of this designation gave rise to considerable protests. The center of the chamber is now occupied by the enlarged (and consequently also controversial) sculpture "Mother with dead son" by Käthe Kollwitz. Leave a Comment Phone: -

by rcsparty You MUST walk down the Unter Der Linden. It stretches from the Berliner Dom to the Brandenburg Tor. There are a number of restraurants and bars that are definately worth stopping for a mid-day break. The cafes scattered in the middle center median are a relaxing way to take a break from the sight seeing. This is the transition from east to west.
