Sights: Overpriced city tour in Potsdam.

  • City tour bus in Potsdam. - Berlin
    City tour bus in Potsdam.

Potsdam train station has 2 exits. On the one exit you can find all the local public transport busses and trams. On the other exit are waiting for you the city tour busses. If by mistake you choose to go towards this exit, don't be naive. They are selling in the price of 18 E the same city tour that the local bus 695 is doing. Specially during winter, when the palaces are not open to the public, the extra of having audioguide I m afraid that makes not such a big difference.

Go towards the north exit of the station and take public bus 695. It will take you to the gardens and parks for free if you have already a Berlin ABC ticket card!

For sheer size, the Spree isn't much. There are some lovely grand building beside it, but it's just not as impressive as a boat trip on the Seine or as cosily intimate as a hike through the Amsterdam canals.

There are good views from the bridges so a boat trip really isn't very necessary I think.

Sights: Checkpoint Charlie Museum--Just barely worth it
  • Tip Rating:
  • Grrr--First the aggrevations: cost--9,50 to get in; 3 more if you want an audio narration unit; 2 Euros to use a locker, which they seemed to require for ANY daybag or shopping bag, 0,30 more (strongly encouraged by a sign) to go to the bathroom. Building layout: the museum started as some rooms in an apartment and it shows--the space layout is confusing and confining. We spent a hot, stuffy 15 minutes at the bottom of a narrow stairway waiting to get to the exhibits on the second floor. The space doesn't flow in any clear, meaningful way. Individual exhibits: VERY text heavy and without a clear organizational structure. One of the movies being shown is (hang on) an English-language Disney movie, dubbed into German with English subtitles. Even so, I'd still recommend it with the stated reservations because the exhibits are a passionate introduction to the PEOPLE and the hunger for FREEDOM. Very moving, very educational in spite of the drawbacks. Lots of exhibits contain the ACTUAL car, or airplane or scuba equipment used in a particular escape.

If you go, go very early or very late to avoid the crowds. Skip the rented audio. Go to the bathroom before you go inside and don't take a bag with you. Treat the museum like you'd treat a faded, wrinkled "one of a kind" photograph of people or a historic event you care deeply about--for all its faults, its a window on some amazing people and an important period in German and world history.

There's a Berlin Wall Museum I believe in the Mitte district. We walked by it but didn't go in. It looked worth checking out. The Disney movie in the Checkpoint Charlie Museum isn't bad,but don't spend 90 minutes of your vacation watching it in dubbed German. Rent "Night Crossing" when you get home.

    BELL WHICH SCARED ME TO
    DEATH :-)

When I was going upstairs to the viewing platform of the tower of St. Mathew Church the very sudden and huge noise scared me a lot. It was surely impressive sound of this electrically moving bell on my picture. Haha, now I can't stop laughing but I almost fell downstairs at first moment that time. I should expect the bell's huge sounds but I didn't.

Just DO ACCEPT the noice. And if you are US citizen you can eventually try to sue them at American court (if possible) and win a lot of money for next travels :-). There were no warnings on that noise or I didn't notice any. Happy sueing!

The bell rings every exact hour, skip that time. Eventually wear something anti-noice for your ears :-)

Sights: Potsdam palaces closed during winter
  • Tip Rating:
  • During Christmas holidays palaces in Postdam attract locals and tourists for a visit. However this is not an adequate reason for the local authorities to keep these attractions open to the public. Everything is closed and the only option for the visitor is to wander around the park, looking the palaces only from outside. I saw many people, German and foreigners as well to be surprised by the fact that couldn't enter the palaces. It was very disappointing.

Wander around the park. At the entrance of the park near Sans souci there is a nice restaurant cafe. Also at the exit on New palace side there is a small and modest cafe-restaurant. Use these places to have a drink, a light meal and since the WC facilities are also closed in the park, to go to the toilet as well.

Wander in the park and then go down town to find a restaurant and have a nice meal. Potsdam and the palaces' park is a beautiful surrounding after all.

  • Tip Rating:
  • If I were a tourist I were glad to know that the Hackesche Höfe is no place to be. The bars are far too expensive and crowded and really (!!!) nice backyards you can find only five minutes away from that in the Sophienstraße. Furthermore, I would not buy Icecream in the Icecream shop at Bahnhof Friedrichstraße because it is neither delicious nor inexpensive.

  • Berliner Dom, while it is a gorgeous cathedral, you have to pay to see the inside. That's outlandish. Since when do you pay just to visit a church?

    Sights: Filmstudios Babelsberg
  • Tip Rating:
  • This 'amusement park', or these film studios (however you want to call it lol), is/are located in Potsdam, a city next to Berlin. The day I went there will always stay in my mind as one of the most boring days in my life LOL Thank goodness we (I was there with school) got cards for 'Vera am Mittag', a talk show which has its studio there, otherwise I think I wouldn't have survived this day lol j/k

  • Tip Rating:
  • The renovation of the Brandenberg Gate is still dragging on. Many people including me quite happily walk under all the scaffolding into Unter den Linden and then walk back. T-Mobil is still getting it's advertising value for money though.

  • CHECKPOINT CHARLIE AND THE WALL MUSEUM... which are now right down the street from the 'Galerie Lafayette' shopping mall! Yet another incongruity... and hopefully a sign of ultimately-positive change.
