Around the Brandenburg Gate are numerous stalls selling East German "cold war" hats, russian badges , flags and military uniforms. My mistake was stopping at the stall selling "REAL" parts of the Berlin Wall placed in a fancy plastic case with East German coin!It didnt occur to me until after my trip that this tiny piece of rock , sprayed to look like graffitti could have come direct from a building site nextdoor!!
Unique Suggestions: Stick to the Hats!!
Early in the morning before my seminar took place I had some time to stroll around when I passed by the little shops near Checkpoint Charlie. The vendors just opened their stand. Maybe it is a big prejudice but for me it already smels like a tourist trap ...
Don't buy anything from the private dealers at Brandenburger Tor. They charge you extreme prices for pieces of the Berlin wall (who knows which wall they really come from) and sell former military hats and uniforms. It is far too expensive!!
Avoid shopping at the Kudamm-area. There are many nice shops in this area, but they are really expensive compared to other places in Berlin.
This used to be no mans land....now it's best avoided for other reasons as it's only there to part you from your Euros...
