The former quaters for the servants were called "Communs" and they are the elegant buildings opposite of the main castle - in fact it was quite a unique idea by the king to grant them to live in such a beautiful, seperate castle. Today this part of the castle still needs some restorations, and it is used for the castle-administration, and NOT open to the public !Well, not at all a bad place to live as a servant in the royal castle......but of course the building had to match to the rest of the palace, and the interior was of course not as great as the fassade.

The new Palais consists of 200 rooms and was built between 1763 and 1769 with a high dome. In 12th century Albert the Bear united the remnants of the Slavic-speaking Wends between Havel, Spree and Oder River, expanded this territory and in 1150 he inherited the principality of Brandenburg from its last Wendish prince. Charles IV forced the Wittelsbach (that ruled Brandenburg in 12 and 13th century) to surrender and conferred Brandenburg on his son Wenceslaus in 1373. When Wenceslaus became German king in 1378, Brandenburg went to his brother Sigismund, who formally transferred it to Frederick I of the house of Hohenzollern in 1417. Between 1614 – 1618 the Electors of Brandenburg acquired some West German territories and the duchy of Prussia. Under the regency of Frederick William Brandenburg emerged as a military power.
