Friedrich the Great - "the old Fritz"
Friedrich the Great was born January 24th, 1712 in Berlin and died august 17th,1786 in SanssouciHe made many reforms of legislation and education and he made an end to torture in prisons.He was interested in literature and music, he was playing the flute and even made some compositions himself.He had to do some wars in order to keep and enlarge his kingdom, but mainly was interested in all sorts of art.He was respected by his subjects and finally got his nickname "the old Fritz", when he went to the small villages of his kingdom, in order to teach the farmers how to plant and harvest potatoes that were completely unknown before.It was a very bad time for plenty of people in Prussia. The soil was not very good for growing wheat and so Friedrich II. told his farmers to grow potatoes, a vegetable not known at all by most farmers in Europe at that time.The king could persuade his farmers to...
